The US Navy could still send an aircraft carrier through the Taiwan Strait in spite of Chinese military technology advances which pose a greater threat to American warships than ever before, the US chief of naval operations has said.
Such an operation would inevitably increase the risk of military conflict between the world's largest superpowers, which are currently locked in an escalating trade war and ongoing disputes over territorial claims in the South China Sea.
Washington sent ships through the strategic waterway, which separates Taiwan from the Chinese mainland, three times last year, but has not dispatched a carrier in more than 10 years.
During that time, China has modernised its forces with missiles specifically designed to strike enemy ships.
We dont really see any kind of limitation on whatever type of ship could pass through those waters, Admiral John Richardson told reporters in Tokyo, Japan, when asked if more advanced Chinese weapons posed too large a risk.

The Chinese didn't even send any fighters out to play.
It's important that the US Navy show the world, and China, that they do not have the guts or the capability to challenge the US Navy at sea.
Bad headline.. US Navy chief... When they meant CNO.
Would make more sense to take the New Jersey out of mothballs and sail her through those international waters. She’d be a lot harder to sink.
“within 250 miles of Beijing”
although I can see why China would be unhappy with this (as would we, were the situation reversed).
I want the world’s greatest military to defend the USA; but not to be the world’s policeman in all situations everywhere.

Little more than a hardened target with no bite.

Keeping the Sea Lanes of Communication open to free flowing commerce has been the bedrock key of US security since the inception of the Republic.
Yep I opened this link thinking some chief was running his mouth and let some secrets slip.

“But they never do, since weve never actually claimed anything outside of our 12-mile territorial waters as American territory.”
They don’t because they are unable to support a battle group that far from their own shores.
“Chinese ships show up all the time near Hawaii. “
They’ve never ventured that far out with a group of warships.
[They dont because they are unable to support a battle group that far from their own shores.]
Our war is here and we are losing, not in the South China Sea.
A U.S. Navy Chief has no authority to release such information.
With a few SSBNs and attack subs just sitting there, waiting.
A CVN is not easy to sink.
....and don’t forget our aircraft carriers travel with escorts. Send it through, the Chinese will threaten, watch it and take notes, our folks will be at battle stations.
On a positive note, if the ChiComs go hot then say good buy to any and all trade with them! Ha ha Free Traitors!!!!
The Bering Sea is a closer reach for them than Hawaii, or the US mainland.
Hainan to Hawaii is over 6,000 miles and not a friendly port in between.
Putting 3 Frigates in waters 2,500 miles from home with a friendly port 500 miles away is something the Iranian Navy could do. Yet the Chinese brag about it.
Just like they brag about all the very cool, anime-looking weapons they’re working on...as if they are widely deployed.
While still not being able to manufacture a high-performance jet engine that will run for more than 100 hours. Even when provided the detailed engineering plans.
“Bad headline.. US Navy chief... When they meant CNO.”
Maybe they have a COB in charge of the Pacific Fleet...that would likely be an improvement.
