Rand Paul suggests holding State of the Union in Senate

Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) on Thursday suggested President Trump hold his State of the Union address in the Senate after Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) asked the president to postpone the Jan. 29 address amid the partial government shutdown.

"I think that’s a real affront to the American people," Paul said on "Fox & Friends," referring to Pelosi's request.

Pelosi made the surprise request on Wednesday, warning that staging the speech amid the partial shutdown — which has affected both the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Secret Service — creates security risks.

Paul said denying the move would be the first time in U.S. history that the House denied the president a forum to speak and suggested Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) should host Trump.

"What I would suggest is — Senator McConnell’s in charge of the Senate; let’s host it in the Senate," Paul said. "This would be the first time in history that the House would deny the president the forum of speaking."

"If she’s going to do that, let’s hold it in the Senate," Paul concluded.

The "Fox & Friends" hosts asked the live audience if they would support holding the State of the Union speech in the Senate, and they clapped in response.

It hardly matters WHERE it’s delivered.... so long as it IS delivered and is PUBLICLY available.

Liberals want to put a ‘gag order’ on the President of the United States of America. REALLY!!??

How F’n immature they are!

On the one hand, having the SOTU in the Senate will have the Democrats calling him afraid to face his critics.

On the other hand, having it before a joint session gives the Dems an opportunity to make fools of themselves.

Either close the gallery to the public, or fill it with victims of crimes committed by illegals

That would make the matter of “security” a whole lot easier

And block the House Democrats from getting through the door

What is the capacity of the conference hall?

Can Rat House POS be invited to crash the speech, fill the room and overwhelmingly boo everything our President says?

I’d love to see him send it Certified Registered Return Receipt Required USPS Mail to Tuna Nan’s flunky aide — by name.

He holds it in the Senate.
Or he holds it from the Oval Office.
Or he holds it in an arena in front of 15,000 supporters.

Either way, you LOSE-LOSE-LOSE, Nancy.

Do it. And while giving the speech, President Trump could further the conversation by recommending a law that withholds paychecks to the President, VP, cabinet and Congress if there is not an approved budget for the entire government after Oct 1st.

The networks won’t cover that where they would cover the Senate.

A rally costs money. There will be questions as to who paid for it, and how much.

The Senate or even from the oval office might be better, although, I think getting him out there in front of the Senate and others would be good.

There is a problem that you are ignoring. The House has its own rules and a Majority Leader (ptuh!). If she says no to using the House floor, Trump needs to respect that. OTOH, the Senate floor is a nice place, and has a Majority Leader who can legitimately say yes.

I actually think Trump should call the Dems bluff and just show up at the House for the SOTU and dare the Dems to order the bailiff to remove him. So what, that’s a win. If he ends up giving the speech at the House and the Dems stay, its a win. If the Dems walk out, it’s a win.

If he’s blocked at the House he could do his SOTU at the Senate, Oval office or wherever. It would be great theatre and Trump could claim victim status. And, you bet there would be a lot more interest in the SOTU and free speech in general

True, there are leftists that like censorship. But I believe that the majority of the people still think that the President should not be censored.

The Dems pulled a lot of stunts during his 2018 SOTU. They didn't stand when he entered and left. They booed. Some boycotted.

Newt Gingrich made a collage of the grimaces of Pelosi...

The Dems do NOT want any more bad publicity right now. They're hiding behind a Congressional door right now. They don't know what to do.

Just give him the damn money for the "barrier"...You thought it was a good idea for years and years. "Power" has clouded your judgment.

The Rally would have the additional advantage of breaking the tradition of doing it before congress established by Woodrow Wilson.

Trump could remind the crowd of other traditions established by Woodrow Wilson which ought to be terminated. Most Freepers are a fairly well-educated lot, so I do not need to list the specifics here.
