That's no longer the case. Since 2010, when the SUpreme Court struck down the Illinois gun laws, Illinois has been a "shall issue" state, with 246,769 active CCW holders as of June 2017, all of which are allowed to carry in Chicago.

9,000 criminal homicides involving a gun, compared with just 265 justifiable homicides involving a private citizen using a firearm

I love how they parse statistics to 'make a point.' How about the many, many cases where a private citizen who is carrying has defended themselves without firing a shot, much less killing the perpetrator?

Nah, that wouldn't support their unsupportable position.

I’d much rather have an abundance of guns than an abundance of progressives.

Not only that, but she ignores the hard-to-quantify deterrence effect -- thugs who want to commit crimes against persons, but don't because they fear the person might shoot back.

Muggers, carjackers, armed robbers -- they commit a LOT of crimes per year if that's how they support themselves. If you commit two hundred violent crimes per year, and just 1% of your victims are armed, your luck will run out before end of year.

The Harvard study is seriously flawed.

What they need to look at is how many crimes against CC holders took place versus how many of those crimes resulted in the perp getting shot. That is the number we need to validate the study. If we don’t use that number, the study is garbage.

RE Nina:

One gets the impression that Nina would be apologizing for - and TO - the mugger.

What happened to the “if it only saves one life, it’s worth doing?”

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

The Left only applies this “selectively” and guns are excluded.

You made the points I was thinking about.

I would venture a guess that most “uses” of firearms to prevent crimes aren’t documented. How many times does a would-be robber or attacker approach someone and then make a sudden, abrupt change in plans and direction when the intended victim either pulls a weapon or even makes a motion towards a possible weapon? I doubt if most of those instances are reported. I think it’s also probable that some potential crimes are stopped just by the potential victim’s situational awareness that makes the criminal decide to look for easier prey.

Another “statistic” I’d like to see is the percentage of the criminal homicides that involved a completely innocent victim vs. the percentage of criminals killing each other. What percentage of criminal homicides involving a gun was gang violence, drug dealers fighting over territory, that sort of thing?

...when she was approached by a teen who attempted to rob her with a gun.

Notice the author’s use of ‘teen’? Although factually true, it is there to elicit sympathy for the man who tried to rob a woman at gunpoint. Very crafty.

---yep--several years ago I was able to post on both the Trib and the Chicago S-T -

-the anti-firearms (i.e., nearly all ) threads were always about ten to one against the newpaper's opinion-

-the result was the removal of the ability to comment---

It is extremely rare for a legal gun owner to use a gun successfully in self-defense.

LIES!

Real a REAL researcher, like John Lott or Clayton Cramer.

The usual nonsense that ignores all the times guns were used to chase off attackers and robbers by simply brandishing them.

And also ignores the plummeting homicide rate as concealed carry became the norm across the land.

Hoplophobes are so tiring.

There are a few things that if you EVER need and don’t have available, chances are you will NEVER need them or anything again.

Two that come to mind are

A Handgun

A Parachute
