Beijing has said it will not hesitate to use force if Taipei formally declares independence, or in the case of external intervention -- including by the United States, the island's most powerful unofficial ally.

Why would they declare independence? They see themselves as the proper rulers of mainland China as well, so I highly doubt they would renounce that claim.

I agree...a great place to visit. We specifically went there for the National Museum with its Chinese art treasures but managed to se a bit of Taiwan and its surrounds. Great place, friendly people, easy to navigate and clean.
