The mature stoner: why are so many seniors smoking weed?
The Guardian (UK) ^ | January 15th, 2019 | Alex Halperin

Older people are the fastest-growing group of cannabis users, as stigma fades and some seek an alternative to prescription drugs

As attitudes towards cannabis shift, the fastest-growing group of users is over 50 – and marijuana’s popularity among seniors is beginning to change the American experience of old age.

Why are more seniors getting high? It might make more sense to ask: “Why not?” As adults reach retirement, they age out of drug tests and have far more time on their hands. Some feel liberated to abandon long-held proprieties.

Elegant vape pens and other attractive, discreet products have helped de stigmatize the drug among older Americans. “Legalization seems to make non-users seem a little less scared of it, and perhaps less judgmental,” says Jo, a 56-year-old cannabis user who preferred not to use her real name.

The seniors using cannabis today aren’t your parents’ grandparents. The generation that camped out at Woodstock is now in its seventies. They’ve been around grass long enough to realize it’s not going to kill them, and are more open to the possibility it will come with health benefits. (By contrast, in a survey of one, my 100-year-old grandmother recently said she had no interest in medical marijuana.)

Yes, many people condemn the character of others, oftentimes without any real data. Public condemnation is another form of virtue signaling.

My biggest beef with this article is them calling 50 year olds “seniors”.

“The writer felt using the term “old farts” would be offensive.”

For 50+ year olds, I might go with “Fifty-somethings”, but for real “seniors”, I’d just go with “old”. Ain’t nuthin wrong with being just plain old.

Interesting story about Roanoke. Its airport gets more drug busts than any other airport. The reason being it is exactly half way between Miami and NYC.
Another problem for Culpeper, wild pigs in the area, especially around the Rt. 3 area.

It’s legal here in Michigan now but we just have no interest.

Indeed. Nobody should tell them what to do, nor do they need to listen to anybody.

Just that even for retired people there really are other joys in life, than sitting and being stoned.

But of course it’s everyone’s personal choice.

I’m still trying to square that unique circle of logic.

The same way you can accept that someone has been drinking since college, but aren't automatically an alcoholic.

It's hard for me to believe but I'm technically a senior citizen now. I've done more than just pot in my 20s. I've love to be able to try pot again but it sets a bad example for my son, so I won't.

"No, the reason is that they have all along, the senior stoners are yesterday’s hippies."

Yes. Many of us have been told by the potheads over the years, about how they were warned by their employers in advance about drug tests. Now, some of them are coming out of the closet with it, while taxpayers are supporting their lifestyle advocacy in retirement. The libertine, communist Millennial faction didn't invent their aberrations. They picked up those bad habits from their sneaky elders.

Hey, pot is being legalized. Isn’t that resulting in less government?

Always should have been left to the States. Feds have no role.

I’d say they’d be a prime candidate for the title!

Gosh that sure is nice of you. After months on chemotherapy and a constant state of pain and nausea I found relief with medical marijuana as well as being able to sleep. But now I guess I have to go back to pain, nausea, and insomnia because you say Im not old enough. I would tell you where you can stick your Prohibition-era type attitude but I dont want to get banned.

The legalization of Hemp in the agricultural bill is absolute madness. This stuff is a deadly narcotic

No, hemp is a near-zero-THC strain of marijuana. Educate yourself.
