The mature stoner: why are so many seniors smoking weed?
The Guardian (UK) ^ | January 15th, 2019 | Alex Halperin

Older people are the fastest-growing group of cannabis users, as stigma fades and some seek an alternative to prescription drugs

As attitudes towards cannabis shift, the fastest-growing group of users is over 50 – and marijuana’s popularity among seniors is beginning to change the American experience of old age.

Why are more seniors getting high? It might make more sense to ask: “Why not?” As adults reach retirement, they age out of drug tests and have far more time on their hands. Some feel liberated to abandon long-held proprieties.

Elegant vape pens and other attractive, discreet products have helped de stigmatize the drug among older Americans. “Legalization seems to make non-users seem a little less scared of it, and perhaps less judgmental,” says Jo, a 56-year-old cannabis user who preferred not to use her real name.

The seniors using cannabis today aren’t your parents’ grandparents. The generation that camped out at Woodstock is now in its seventies. They’ve been around grass long enough to realize it’s not going to kill them, and are more open to the possibility it will come with health benefits. (By contrast, in a survey of one, my 100-year-old grandmother recently said she had no interest in medical marijuana.)

“I wish it was better that ibuprofen for arthritis- not so much.”

Nothing beats ibuprofen for bone pain, gout and tooth aches.

Unfortunately it will eventually burn up your liver.

As much exercise as you can manage and a little pot might give as much relief as ibuprofen. Fish oil and vitamin C every day.

No, the reason is that they have all along, the senior stoners are yesterday’s hippies.

Very doubtful the leftover hippies ever stopped smoking pot the past 50 years or so.

My kid could point out the parents in his HS that were stoners. I could point out the teachers.

Important to know: 1. if you have medical marijuana card, or found with or admit to using pot and 2. own firearms, then FEDS will send you to prison. Applies to recreational pot states also.

Wanted to add I am using only about 0.12 gram per session (vaping). That isn’t very much - a few grams last a long time at 1-3 sessions per week.

That is the dope industry line. There is no therapeutic benefit ever concluded by the FDA for dope, Zero. They were smoking rope in the 60’s. This is a mistake — it will quickly be seen as spreading dope use all over the country. The fake myth put out by dope heads that want to grow this stuff is breath taking. There is THC in this stuff BIG TIME and everyone knows it. My arguments were rejected by total denial of the narcotic user and propagandist for the weed industry. Do we now subsidize the dope farmer for bad weed weather now? What a crock. This is part of our slide to Gamora— the greatest since we let the government run the lottery numbers racket. So decadent.I don’t like it and I will never accept it.

Please don’t take this the wrong way. this is more of a generic response. Do you suffer from the effects of aging? If so and your taking Rx meds, you might want to give it a shot. Today’s weed is not like anything from the past. It is more potent, which means you actually smoke less to get the same feeling. Its doesn’t give you a hangover but I recommend you not have anything planned to go anywhere. Just sit back and relax for 3-4 hours.

“1. if you have medical marijuana card, or found with or admit to using pot and 2. own firearms, then FEDS will send you to prison.”

You cannot cite a single example of that happening.

I quit smoking that shyt in 1972. Mainly because I got tired of getting threats to have my utilities shut off for forgetting to pay the bill. After 46 years I don’t miss it one bit. However the people I know who kept smoking are all victims of TDS. Don’t let it happen to you.

“I think you know legalized pot results in MORE government”

You’re correct. You can now have it legally, but with red tape.

Yes, I can see your point about more government, just look at the regulatory structures in place for tobacco and alcohol. On the other hand, less government resources are presumably spent on enforcement, so perhaps it’s more of a shift in the ever-increasing spiral. I expect legal marijuana’s impact on taxes & law enforcement are in line with enforcing liquor, tobacco and lottery laws, taxes, & regulations. Legal weed is only an admission, like alcohol, tobacco and gambling laws that it is what it is.
