If they can afford to...

Not all businesses have that kind of capital.

They don't have to. Most of the mechanization of agriculture was not undertaken by farmers as such but by engineering/auto companies.

Best re-read my post if you think that’s virtue signaling.

When your business model depends on slave labor, you're always going to need more slaves.

Has been my tag line for years.

Ann Coulter once spoke of “scare quotes.” The first sentence in the CBS article provides an example. Did any of Obama’s utterances warrant scare quotes at See BS?

Public schools and emergency rooms. What else do the farmers want to pass on to the public?

Exactly so. That's what pi$$es me off about the discussion about illegal immigration, the dissembling and half lies.

The rest of the post was fine but you have to admit the first sentence was virtue signalling. There is no need to do that here.

“...worked construction during the early 90s. There was a housing boom in Colorado”

I was working with my brother-in-law in the DC metro area during the 90s during the Boom and there it was Central and South American workers, most of whom I have no doubt were illegal.

We had to hire two extra people (bouncers) just to watch the tools because the tools would grow legs and walk away from our truck.

Well, that is what those in power consider them to be, slaves. They also consider us to be their slaves. They continue to live high on the hog from the sweat of our labor. That “Of the People, For the People, by the People” concept ship has sailed long ago. They now consider themselves to be our masters, not our servants. And they, not us will determine who governs us. If you don’t believe that, look how they treat President Trump. He was neither selected nor approved by them, yet We the People elected him. If you care to look and observe, the results of that are plain. They wanted one of their own, Hillary Clinton. One of the biggest criminals in the history of the World.

Is the US Government still buying dairy products that no one else wants to consume?

Or automate and avoid the logistics of transporting and feeding people or worrying you get sued by someone who gets sick.

likely not dairy products themselves but the excessive/over consumption of them.

Meat can ruin health as can fruit, and many other foods if you ingest more than appropriate for your body (and not what the food councils say is appropriate since they are bought and paid for)

So what is the real cost of illegal labor?

THAT'S the question. Who cares what we pay for veggies if we make up the difference paying for 'free' schools and 'free' medical care?

if you pay them more they will stop doing drugs and come to work on time three days a week. /s

I’ve spent 35 years working in a smokestack industry, and I can tell you you don’t get good behavior by offering “opportunities.”

Offer people a wage they can build a decent life on, and they become amazingly diligent. Complaining about the labor force is excusing the employer’s conceit and avarice.

And no, doubling minimum wage is not enough. I wouldn’t start looking for loyalty until somewhere north of twenty dollars an hour.

Does Canada rely on illegal immigrant labor? If not, then what are they doing differently?

It’s funny. I remember what the leftists said when they passed the Clean Water Act Amendments in about 1970. When industry representatives said the costs were prohibitive, Dem Senators said, any business that can’t afford the cost should close down. I’m pretty sure that was liberal icon Ed Muskie who said that.

So, now we should not close down a “bad” industry that is not economical to operate without breaking the law? Hey, liberals!! What other laws is it OK for businesses to break?

Make a law that illegal immigrants must be paid the same as legal immigrants and American citizens. Border crossings will stop.

This is a form of slave labor, pure and simple. Slavery didn’t end well the last time and it won’t end well this time.

it's my area of expertise and research – let's zoom in on it. Overall, the agricultural industry in the United States has been on the decline since 1950.

This "expert" seems to forget that US Agriculture has grown quite steadily... producing 63 million tonnes of soybeans in 1950, and 103 million today (4 Billion bushels)... corn produced 40 bu/ac, now we produce 170 bu/ac... wheat: was 18, now 42 bu/ac... where is this "decline", Mr Expert???
