With no new talks, LA teacher strike all but inevitable

A strike by tens of thousands of teachers in Los Angeles, the nation's second-largest school district, is all but inevitable starting Monday after the two sides did not renew negotiations over the weekend.

Talks broke down Friday when the teachers' union rejected as "woefully inadequate" a new offer from the LA Unified School District.

With no new discussions scheduled, pickets are likely to begin at 7 a.m. as teachers stand firm on sticking points including higher pay and smaller class sizes.

Schools will stay open if a walkout happens. The district, with 640,000 students, has hired hundreds of substitutes to replace teachers and others who leave for picket lines.

The union, United Teachers Los Angeles, wants a 6.5 percent hike that would take effect all at once and be retroactive to fiscal 2017.

A backwards raise? Good thing they aren't teaching economics.

NFL scab football during the strike was pretty good football.

Could the replacement teachers actually do a better job?

Those “retro raises” are SOP when it comes to negotiating contracts when teachers haven’t been working with one; these deals killed NJ taxpayers, and will do the same in CA. I suspect that like NJ, there is a massive demographic difference between the taxpayers over 50 paying for these things and the recipients under 18 receiving the services. Actually, it is occurring nationwide; American workers/taxpayers paying for services for non-working foreigners.

Maybe student scores will go up. If the strike goes on for awhile, let’s test and find out.

Learning in public schools is woefully inadequate, due to left wing communist brainwashing.

It happens in the private sector some, but not for that long. I think the longest retro pay I’ve been given was 3 months.

You sound like the illiteracy rates are a bad thing. This whole dumbing down has been planned for decades. It’s easier to control a population without an education.

The socialist rulers have done a wonderful job. They’ve stayed on point for several generations. First by educating a class of teachers who do not like children, think the guberment owes them everything, an attitude that they are the best of the best and expect you to kowtow to them. These teachers brainwashed the next generation of teachers into puppets for the state.

Solution - take pay from the low-performers and give it to the high performers....then fire anyone who doens’t think that’s fair.

Offer the teachers an 8.00% hike going back to 2017. For that they will no longer have to pay union dues, but they will have to pay their own health insurance, sick and vacation time is no longer accrued and their new pay increases and “bonuses” will stem from performance metrics set up by the Dept of Education.

See what they say.

No, the four main requests are: 1.) more nurses, counselors, & libriarians, 2) less standardized testing (very expensive) 3. smaller classes, 4) pay raise.

They offered just the pay raise and the union said no, because the other three are just as important.

35,000 Teachers, 640,000 students:
18 Students per class on Average.

510,000 of the 640,000 students are English Learners or Very Poor, in other words:
80% are Illegal Aliens or Children of Illegal Aliens.

80% of High School Graduates can NOT read, write or count at the 4th grade level, greater than a 50% dropout rate.

FIRE ALL OF THEM and DISBAND the School District.
