As Shutdown Continues, Thousands Of Federal Workers Visit D.C.-Area Pop-Up Food Banks
NPR ^ | Jan 13, 2019 | Ian Stewart

Early Saturday morning, nearly 200 people stood in the freezing cold outside a Maryland supermarket waiting to collect a small allotment of free food.

They were federal employees, there to pick up fresh produce and canned goods from the Capital Area Food Bank, which organized five pop-up food distribution centers for government workers.

I think it is a sad commentary that people working for the government would have to line up for free food only 2 days after missing a paycheck. Trying to imagine how these people must conduct their lives offers a little insight into why government fails at so much of what it does in its quest to manage our lives.

They are there for fresh produce. Hope they don't catch some horrible disease because the lettuce they eat was contaminated by 3rd-world illegals who don't know anything about hygiene.

That would be ...... ironic.

Give them government cheese.

Apparently we have tons of it stored around the country.

It’s free food.

I guarantee half of them or more live completely on $5.99 fast food specials. Maybe the shutdown will teach them a little about cooking.

This is one of the things I have been debating on our local paper’s site.

How bad do you manage your life if 48 hours after missing one check you need to wait in line for hours to get food? I have made $1,000 a month in this nation and been unemployed from that job and not come close to starving.

I truly don’t believe that this is anything more than the union telling people “This is your version of a picket line.” They’re not on strike but they can show for the cameras they’re “suffering”.

How can so many so useless, demonstrate such incompetence in such a short period of time?

My family has been affected by this, and it sucks...
But...
I also wonder:
Why are people who haven’t saved enough money
to get by for a week or two,
running our country?

The same people who buy a $5 Latte at Starbucks on the way to work every day. $100 a Month for a cup of swill.

When I was 19, my friends and I were working in in the Oil Field, Homeless by choice living in a campground. Our Daily Allotment for FOOD for each of us was $1 Dollar, 1 can of Chunky Soup and 1 Package of Top Ramen.

We never ran out of beer though and allowed ourselves each a 12 pack a day.

Are they going to pay for these freebies after they get their checks?

Sorry but I don’t feel the least bit sorry for these losers.

This is nonsense... have they even missed a check yet... I don’t think so. Sorry, looks like a bunch of deadbeat scam artists to me.

Having lived around DC for 3.5 years and left five years ago (for retirement), I will vouch that a fair number of folks are clearing $100,000-plus each year, and maxed out on debt (they paid for homes they couldn’t afford....they bought expensive cars with no real downpayment....they maxed out with 50,000 to 100,000 in credit card debt....and they have college debt which they attempt to pay down at least $6,000 a year. About every month, I’d bump into someone and finances would come up, and it was clear that these idiots had no emergency savings existing, and they were living month-to-month off their government employment check.

The WaPo gave one example in a story around 2011 timeframe....a couple who bought worked, and were clearing near $250,000 a year (I think one of the two had a military pension even feeding into this). They were a month-by-month couple. The house was way more than they could afford, and the gal had still 20,000 left to pay on student debt from the 1990s.

Where is the NPR story when Americans were lined up at Food Bank during the “Great Recession” when the gov’t workers were living fat and happy on the tax payers’ dime?
