I can’t think of any profession where somebody doesn’t make a mistake every once in a while....

Improper trigger discipline.

It's one of the few where a "mistake" could lead to someone's death.

So apparently the dog jumped on the officer from behind and his gun went off because his finger was on the trigger thus shooting his partner the back

The officer is not facing any discipline because it was “just an accident”. I thought lawyers had removed that phrase from the American vocabulary.

The gun’s at fault. The dog’s at fault. The door manufacturer is at fault... SOMEBODY has to pay Officer Bryant’s hospital bills. It can’t be “just an accident”.

So, if I took out my gun in defense and then shot the officer in the back as she was leaving, could I say it was just an accident? Or could my corpse?

When it comes to firearms, there are very few, darn near nil, “accidental discharges”.

Negligent discharges are another matter.

I put this firmly in the latter category. He was violating at least 2 of Coopers’ 4 rules.

On the other hand we (OR) had a teen pull and point a replica/pellet pistol at an officer. The video was captured on body cam. Officer told the kid to drop the weapon, which he did. A cop would have been justified shooting in that split second. Chief of police was near tears explaining the incident in how close the kid came to death.

Down here in Calipornia, we just shoot 'em in the back without warning, more time for doughnuts.

If he shot he in the shoulder he probably had the gun up in a firing position rather than pointed down in a guard or caution position. And he had his finger on the trigger. While he was behind his partner. There goes the whole Cooper rulebook.

Yes, I was in information technology, we could just delete our mistakes and try again.

However, this does not apply to surgeons and police officers.

Until I get behind-the-scenes video of the guy talking about it, I'll believe those to be crocodile tears.
