Earth’s magnetic pole is on the move, fast. And we don’t know why

Earth’s magnetic field is what allows us to exist. It deflects harmful radiation. It keeps our water and atmosphere in place. But now it’s acting up — and nobody knows why. Planet Earth is alive. Deep beneath its skin, its life blood — rivers of molten iron — pulse around its core. And this mobile iron is what generates the magnetic field that causes auroras — and keeps us alive.

But, according to the science journal Nature, something strange is going on deep down below.

It’s causing the magnetic North Pole to ‘skitter’ away from Canada, towards Siberia.

“The magnetic pole is moving so quickly that it has forced the world’s geomagnetism experts into a rare move,” Nature reports...

Yes, we learned long ago in the army that you had to use a map’s date and then apply a formula to get the current north and then use it for nav. If one didn’t do that, it would put you way off.

Could be that pole shifting is the cause of climate change, which has nothing to do with cow farts.

As part of my job I periodically check the magnetic declination. Trust me, it hasn’t moved that much. But we know it’s always moving a bit.

The core of the earth is a dynamic system under great strain and pressure.

Dynamic systems change all the time. Even on a geological scale.

It's like when you stir a pot of hot tomato sauce. Even as you stir it to even the temperature steam bubbles form and break the surface splattering hot tomato sauce all over the stove, counter top, and floor you just cleaned.

Those of us who still like to use an old-fashioned compass rather than GPS etc for navigation, either in the mountains or on the water, have always been accustomed to adjust the bearing for magnetic deviation: so that it's always been necessary to know the current deviation, specific to the location, between true north and magnetic north. Good topographic maps have always shown this, together with the anticipated average annual change from the date of publication: but of course this information soon becomes out of date. The advent of websites showing the current deviation for any location on the globe has therefore been very welcome. They're doubtless going to be very busy given this rapid change.

Incidentally I can see nothing in the report which claims this acceleration has anything to do with climate change.
