Craft beer drinkers in the U.S. may see fewer new bottled beers coming out in the next few months.
That's because the federal agency that approves brewery labels is closed, a result of the government shutdown.
The Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau is part of the U.S. Department of the Treasury. One of the TTB's jobs is to review beverage alcohol labels for things like alcohol content or fluid ounces in a bottle.

This whole shutdown is slowly educating people that the Federal Government does WAAAAAAY too much.

I really hope this shutdown continues! It is eye opening how much unnecessary givernment is being revealed. Next we’ll be reading that the super bowl is cancelled because of the shutdown! Unfortunately, that might get half the conseratives in this country to forget the wall.
I was thinking the same thing though I’m not convinced their ‘progressive’ listeners will come to that conclusion.
We’ll just have to suffer along with only 100,000 or so...
NPR is really scraping the bottom of the keg to make the shutdown seem terrible.
Blue laws and revenue. What a great example of another government agency that is totally unnecessary. The FDA already has excessive rules. A redundant agency only a government could dream about. Look at the label standards promulgated by the FDA. How much recalled pork was there last month from a mislabeled product? Now if we could start shutting down the other 85% of Federal Government... [Yes, I know the FDA is partially closed, but why are there redundant agencies?]
Does this mean we will see cans of beer labeled as they were on some TV shows back in the 1950s? Simply...”BEER”.
I remember generic ‘beer’ cans on grocery shelves in the 1980’s. A friend bought some to take to a friend of his in Germany as a joke.
Short answer: because Congress, in its infinite wisdom, has said that it's a crime to sell beer otherwise. Until that law is repealed, no brewer is going to take a chance on violating it.
Longer answer: because the federal excise tax on beer is a function of the amount of beer in a can or bottle and the amount of alcohol in the beer. (Notice that it's the Treasury Department that's in charge of enforcement.)
They will be prosecuted as soon as the shutdown lifts. Or at least are not willing to take that chance.
Fire all these clowns. Talk about a useless function ...
It is actually much worse than that. In Wickard v. Filburn (1942), FDR’s commies on the Supreme Court ruled that Congress could regulate the amount of wheat grown on a farm even though the wheat was never even sold but was instead used to feed the farmer’s own animals on the same farm. The wheat never even left the farm! Their so-called reasoning was something like: if thousands of farmers did what this guy did, it would have an impact on interstate commerce because substantially less wheat would be purchased from interstate commerce.
That is what I was thinking but was too lazy to look it up.

Why am I not surprised that there’s a federal agency that approves beer labels? Seems to me that you have 2 labels... a “standard format label (telling alcohol content, and telling preggers they really shouldn’t indulge), and the other which is the total discretion of the brewer.
See that? I just elimitated a wasteful government bureau!
