No to an Emergency (National Review editorial)
National Review ^ | January 10, 2019 | The Editors

Posted on 01/10/2019 5:05:48 PM PST by EveningStar

President Trump says he is considering declaring an emergency at the border to unlock military funds to build a fence (a.k.a. wall).

It’s not clear how serious he is, although anonymous White House aides have been quoted saying they believe this will be his ultimate way out of the shutdown fight.

It’s a terrible idea. Even if it’s legal — which is unclear, at best — it would represent another unwelcome step in America’s long march toward unilateral government by the executive.

The problem isn’t declaring an emergency. There is ample authority to do that and we live under a couple of dozen little-noticed declarations of emergency that have accumulated over the decades. The issue is redirecting military funds to the border fence. That would require a strained interpretation that treats the border fence as a military matter, among other legal gymnastics.

NR has long been open borders. Fine, put the ‘coast guard’ on the border. Put camps every mile down the border. Every camp will have walls. Walls to protect the guards. Walls that will cover the entire border.

NRO has no problem with presidents unilaterally sending troops to Middle East in the war on terror. But somehow a president isn’t allowed to step up to protect America’s own border

Of course NRO published an entire issue devoted to opposing Trump for president, so who’s surprised that they don’t want him to pursue his agend?

Previous Presidents supported (in word and law) building a fence and shirked their RESPONSIBILITY while they laughed at the gullible citizens.

Previous Presidents also acknowledged a plan to move the US embassy to the capital of Israel and it was President Trump who acted on that agreement.

It’s legal. Suck it, Rats.

Everyone with an open border mentality should be asked if they were willing to move there.

‘Strained interpretation’ that enforcing borders is a military matter? How stupid does one have to be to pretend the last 5,000 years of human history doesn’t exist?

The publication has devolved into National Retards, since William F. Buckley passed away. Now NR has a “cheap labor express” globalist sitting in the editor’s chair.
