Federal workers demand end to government shutdown at White House protest

Hundreds of furloughed federal workers, contractors, union representatives and supporters gathered in the brisk wind and bitter cold Thursday to demand government leaders “end this shutdown.”

Leaders of the National Federation of Federal Employees said they hoped that bringing federal workers to the president’s doorstep would show him whom the shutdown has hurt most. President Trump, though, wasn’t there to see them, having left earlier in the day to visit the U.S.-Mexico border in Texas.

“We want to send a very strong message — that this is not about politics, it’s about getting people back to work,” said Brittany Holder, a spokeswoman for the NFFE and a protest organizer. “A lot of the county thinks federal workers are all here in the D.C. area, but it’s only 15 percent. If you’re living paycheck to paycheck to make ends meet, and suddenly the paychecks stop? People are feeling really stressed and anxious, and they want to know when this will end.”

Protesters, who packed the street outside the AFL-CIO building on 16th Street NW, held signs that declared “I want to go back to work,” and “Congress: Do your job so we can do ours.” The protest came on the 20th day of a partial shutdown that has left nine federal departments and several agencies closed since Dec. 22.

The group began to march about 1:20 p.m. to the White House, calling on Trump to reopen the government with or without funding he has requested for a border wall.

They should go to the source of the shutdown — CONGRESS.

Ask them what they do when they are on strike? Seems to me that solution should work here as well. They could engage in temporary work, for example. Eventually, they will get back pay unlike when they go on strike. Maybe the government should just make changes to union contracts that will encourage them to go on strike. Then, they won’t have any objections.

Maybe they should be protesting Nancy Pelosi. She’s the one holding them hostage.

Brisk cold? How can that be? I thought man-made climate change ended all that, or so the Compost has been telling us.

Yes. They are protesting because they are on a PAID vacation. How horrible for them having to stay at home and still get paid for it someday.

Illegals first. They can’t seem to figure that out.

If you’re living paycheck to paycheck to make ends meet, and suddenly the paychecks stop - it is a darned good learning experience that will NOT go unnoticed!

RE: They get a free vacation and still they complain.

Now let’s be realistic. Many of them have to pay the rent and the bills and other expenses. It’s not as if they want to be in this situation.

What I disagree with is the TARGET of their protest. Why are they going to the White House? It’s Schumer and Pelosi who refuse to negotiate. They should be protesting at Congress.

"...would show him whom the shutdown has hurt most."

Democrats. It will cut into the incomes that their organizations use to lobby against your freedoms.

IMO, they should be constructively discharged and replaced by men.
