My PA is not a doctor. She is a Physician's Assistant.
It is not physicians assistant. it is physician assistant.
I deal with them constantly. Some of my favorite doctors are PAs.
Just wait until when we get single payer medicine. It’s coming if we want it or not.
My dad used to tell me the same thing. I used to argue with him. But I think both of you are right. Sooner or later the current corrupt, teetering system is going to collapse, and Washington, DC is going to be Johnny on the Spot offering to “fix” things with “Medicare For All”.
Since UPMC owns so many hospitals in the greater Pittsburgh area, they are specializing... so now they are moving specializations that have no moral disputes about them to the formerly-Catholic hospitals.
Its likely that part of the contract governing the sale of the hospital to UPMC was that UPMC had to agree to not perform morally-objectionable procedures there, including abortions. This is not an uncommon practice.
Now UPMC is big enough that they can skirt around all of it through shifting the specializations around. Of course, if you are a Pittsburgher who doesnt have UPMCs insurance, none of this matters, because you cant afford care at any of their hospitals anyways.
PA’s are very nice and mostly you see a PA even at your doctor’s office. But not for doing a surgical or invasive procedure, such as abortion.
Interesting that the left claimed for years that they wanted abortions to be performed in medical offices and not by unlicensed persons in “back alleys” - and now they are suddenly saying anybody can do it, anywhere, anytime.
Why do they hate babies and women so much?

Surgery is a specialty. Not every doctor does them. A PA can do anything a doctor can do except have their own practice.
My son spent 249 days in the hospital last year. I met dozens of them.
“Why do they hate babies and women so much?”
While there are probably a lot of reasons, I think that one reason is to destroy what the Left sees as a male run society where a woman’s role is to provide and heir. This frees the woman to be a member of their bold new anti-male Marxist society.
Another reason is, I suspect that many abortionists are serial killer wannabes. They get a sense of power by ending a life. And, if they are lucky, they can injure or kill a woman in the process. I am guessing that very few abortionists are just average Joes.
However, a PA is not an MD or an OD. PA's work under the supervision of a doctor (MD or OD), their have their own license and their own scope of practice, more limited than a doctor's, and their training is different from, and shorter than, a doctor's training. Here, the state of Tennessee places a limit on what can be prescribed, dispensed, or administered by a PA. (So says my PA).
And here in TN (state laws differ) the PA must have a formal relationship on file with a collaborative physician. I understand that various states specify different scopes of practice and different requirements for direct supervision.
So depending where you are, YMMV.
I was born at Mercy Hospital in 1963. I believe my 4 siblings were also born there from 1950 to 1963. My Irish-Catholic family lived in Oakland and attended St. Agnes parish in Oakland. Sad to see this happening at UPMC Mercy.
