After watching the movie, "Spotlight", that sounds like a rather surprisingly low number (60 a year).
And how did they ascertain this number of abused?

It’s the cover-up that is the big problem. THAT is a church problem, not a society problem. And he’s participating in the cover-up by attempting this bit of misdirection.
The Church is the enabler. In every abusive situation, there is usually an enabler, that does not necessarily condone the actions of the abuser, but allows it to occur, either by ignoring it helping to facilitate it.
Years and years ago it was known that the seminaries for priests were FULL of homosexuals. It had to come to fruition.
There are circumstances in the catholic church that made for this perfect storm. Priests not being allowed to marry starts it off. This is not to say that these “men” would not be assaulting boys if they were allowed to marry - I don’t think that’s the case at all.
What this policy did was open them up to homosexuals wanting to become priests. If you were a young homosexual man (especially in Europe, years back) and you did NOT want people to know, what is the perfect out? Join the priesthood. If you do that, you don’t have to explain the lack of interest in women, you get admiration and respect over the moon and back, you have trust from parents beyond reason and access to boys who look up to you and trust you. Plus you get paid to do it. If nobody finds out, you’ve got yourself a nice little perverted gig going.
Add to this the fact that the no marry policy makes the church desperate to find priests as most men want to marry, and you have the perfect disaster waiting to happen. The church knew full well they were bringing in a bunch of homosexuals - but they decided to go with the “if they don’t act on it, they’re welcome in the priesthood” approach.
Now, the perverts in the protestant church, I have no explanation for other than Satan working hard the church.
HE’S ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, SO WHY DID THE CHURCH ALLOW SO MANY OF THEM TO ENTER AND STAY IN THE PRIESTHOOD?

Gay or straight, shouldn’t priests observe their vow of celibacy? Or are they saying that the impulse to engage in homosexual behavior is stronger than their devotion to their faith?
Homosexuality is a sin. A sin is nothing without a sinner.
Can’t imagine that Cardinal Brandmuller is very popular with “Pope” Francis. BTW anyone else notice the similarities between this pope and Captain Queeg. Wonder if Francis has a couple of ball bearings in his pocket.
Should have been a litmus test against gays in clergy...but then lying is ok if you are gay, especially since the bible isn’t even used in many cases.
It was when homosexual pedophiles were allowed to join the priesthood when the abuse began. Time for the Curch to ban homosexuals—homosexuals are not known to be “celibate”
I grew up in the Church and the priests I knew were men, real men that devoted themselves to the Church and their flock. Think Boys Town and other black and white movies that featured a strong priest. It was unheard of for homosexuals to be priests. When the Church started doing the folksinger thing during mass, heck, after Vatican Two, the Church lost its way and homosexual pedophiles flocked to the Church.
Satan-in-chief is this current pope.
So while it could be said that the Church isn't directly,knowingly,responsible it is responsible indirectly.
The two factors are not in any way mutually exclusive.
Yes, all priests should remain celibate. However, experiences shows that most sexual abuse was by gay priests against pubescent and post pubescent boys.
I agree. But the Catholic Church actively covered it up.
