December brought the U.S. healthcare industry's largest monthly spike in the number of new hires since at least February 1990.
Healthcare added 50,200 jobs last month, the largest numeric increase in new hires in Modern Healthcare's monthly jobs data, which stretches back to February 1990. Hiring in the industry jumped 56% from November, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' December jobs report released Friday.
While more than 50,000 new jobs was "an unexpectedly high number,"
Total nonfarm employment rose by 312,000 jobs in December, and the unemployment rate rose by 0.2 percentage points to 3.9%.
Overall in 2018, healthcare added 346,000 jobs, more than the 284,000 jobs added in the industry in 2017.

That’s not necessarily good news as that may be the most bloated, rent-seeking sector in the entire economy save the government itself.

If you knew the profit margins in hospitals, you’d be shocked.
Their services are governed by DRGs (diagnotic related groups), and both the feds and private insurers TELL HOSPITALS what they will pay. Hospitals have reacted by cutting every single thing they can. Maternity stays are often same day release, certainly the next morning. My kids were five and three day stays years ago. It used to be a week or more before that.
At one time a hospital I worked at was losing money on every maternity case. They kept doing them to remain viable for other cases where they could make money.
My simple check up required 3 separate assistants/nurses last time I was at the doctors office. Five if you include the person who checks you in/out. They were different.

We have a Cardiac Nurse, a Pharmacist, two CNAs, a Veterinarian and a Dental Hygienist in the family so far. We encourage ALL younger Nieces and Nephews to, ‘Go Medical’ if they even THINK they have the aptitude.

Interesting. My daughter just got laid off from a healthcare company. Not disputing the results listed but there are always pockets of despair.
Try getting admitted to an HCA hospital. Talk about being skinned alive. They’ll send everybody but the janitor to talk to you, and bill you for it.
I’m not familiar with them today. Seems that I recall they were buying up hospitals across the nation about a decade back. Some of them were going under too.
Three days to a week for an uncomplicated, plain vanilla birth? I don’t know anyone who did that-I went home the same day I had my cub-so did all the other moms who were in my Lamaze group-that was over 45 years ago, and paid for by the US military. My mom went home same day she had me-military again-but at a country hospital in W. Texas. Most women out here now use a nurse practitioner/midwife and either do the deed at home or go to the nearest birthing center-about 30 miles away-and it is like drive-thru surgery-in and out. But this is out in the country, so maybe that is why it is different.
I know people who have had a shrieking temper tantrum when they saw the Bulls*** their insurance-medicaid, Tricare/Tricare for life supplemental, Obamacare, whatever it was-had been billed for-everything from double billing to visits/consults with specialists that never happened. There is something wrong with all this, all right-and it would stop if government would get out of healthcare and leave it to the market to sort out...
If they’re hiring, it’s probably low level employees to try to shift care away from more highly compensated providers. Med technicians instead of LPNs, LPNs instead of RNs, PAs instead of doctors, etc.
Or coders and such to deal with reimbursement.
Or, as the article mentions, home healthcare to try to keep people out of the hospital.
You are absolutely correct! They look in the door and say “how you doing”, and don’t wait for an answer. Then you gat a charge from someone you don’t even know exist.

What percentage were actual “health care providers” vs. what percentage paper-pushers and insurance crones?

I really want to mention on thing about home births. That works well in a lot of instances. If you have a bleeder, they’re dead.
It may cost more, but there’s no way in hell I’d let my wife deliver at home, if I were married and that period of my life again.
If the government paid your hardware bill, it would be the same thing. You wouldn’t likely look at the bill.
Look, the health care industry has problems. Each industry does. I do think people are dedicated there to giving good care and watch the bottom line.
I did when I worked there. I worked my ass off to cut costs.

Yes. I think it only took place for a year, but it was hell when it was happening.
Our hospital went eight years without giving raises, and then implementing floating days off which hurt even more.
When DRGs came in, it was brutal.
When my dad died in the hospital in 2,000 mom was going through the bills and found a $5,000. charge from a doctor she did not recognize. Found the doctor had died 7 years earlier.
Many hospitals lose money on OB cases.
Our hospital certainly does.
We do them because we have a responsibility as a community hospital to deliver babies, and because we don’t want to deliver babies in the ER.
OB losses are driven in large part by the very high cost of malpractice insurance.
