MSM wants to claim “shock” announcement, but it is the end o 2nd yr of Trump’s term and many presidents have some cabinet turnover by 2 yrs in. Not sure yet if there is any “shock” at all... unless Mattis makes a fuss on the way out.

Here is the Mattis resignation letter, released publicly by DoD press office. It is not too specific but it does make the resignation about a difference in views/policies rather than the usual "return to private life" or "spend time with family" etc. (well I don't think Gen. Mattis has much immediate family, he never married....):

Read his letter. He resigned because trump is entitled to a secy who agrees with him, etc
