President Trump said Thursday evening that Defense Secretary James Mattis will be retiring in February, in a shock announcement adding to the list of the president's outgoing Cabinet members after his second year in office.
Mattis will step down "with distinction" after serving in his role for two years, the president said on Twitter.
"During Jim’s tenure, tremendous progress has been made, especially with respect to the purchase of new fighting equipment," Trump tweeted. "General Mattis was a great help to me in getting allies and other countries to pay their share of military obligations. A new Secretary of Defense will be named shortly. I greatly thank Jim for his service!"

MSM wants to claim “shock” announcement, but it is the end o 2nd yr of Trump’s term and many presidents have some cabinet turnover by 2 yrs in. Not sure yet if there is any “shock” at all... unless Mattis makes a fuss on the way out.
i have always felt quite secure with Gen Mattis. he is capable, tough, discreet and no-nonsense. sorry he is going.

I’m sorry he is going but I think 17 years in Afghanistan, Iraq and now Syria is enough. Something big is about to happen with Turkey and I think POTUS wants our troops out of there.

Sorry, but what did he actually DO to improve the military experience for the troops? He oversaw the expenditure of a lot of taxpayer dollars buying new stuff and talked tough but we still seem to have a military that is a social experiment first and a fighting force next.

Clearly it is over some disagreement(s) in policy, maybe as rumored views about Syria, Afghanistan....

Reading between the lines sounds to me like Mattis is pissed about the end of neocon leadership.
