Arizona governor taps Martha McSally to fill Senate seat once held by McCain

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has appointed fellow Republican Rep. Martha McSally to the Senate, he announced Tuesday, picking a favorite of GOP leaders to fill the seat John McCain held for decades.

McSally, who lost a close race for Arizona’s other Senate seat this year, will succeed Sen. Jon Kyl (R). Kyl will step down at the end of the year following a brief time in McCain’s seat after McCain’s death in August.

“With her experience and long record of service, Martha is uniquely qualified to step up and fight for Arizona’s interests in the U.S. Senate. I thank her for taking on this significant responsibility,” Ducey said in a statement.

McSally is expected to run for the seat in a 2020 special election, setting the stage for a potential marquee contest in a battleground state. The seat will also be on the ballot in 2022.

No wonder she conceded so easily. She will not be tough to beat in 2020. Ducey ran and won his reelection in November. If he had made his choice public, he would not have even won his Primary.

Sweet. I can hear the usual Lib suspects starting to squeal like stuck pigs.

It’s odd the timing of the elections. So she will have to run for re-election in 2020 and again in 2022.

If she survives, then the 2022 election would be for a full six year term.

Good luck winning three elections when you couldn’t win one before, McSally.

So it’s a good idea to appoint a proven loser???? Someone who couldn’t beat a dingbat????

Of course you can’t expect much from a state that put mcstain and flake in office.

I don’t like this, but there may be a silver lining. Maybe he is going to run against Sinema in 6 years. Or maybe she will last the primary to him

McSally will be the Senior AZ senator and be ahead of those sworn in in January

Kelli Ward would have been a much more effective counterbalance. But hey, this is the California transplants in Maricopa County speaking, the same ones who put Kristen Sinner in office.

Very difficult to beat an incumbent.

That said, I don’t like her chances in an AZ turning increasingly Purple.

Ducey had no good choices. It could have been worse. Kelly would have put a nail in the coffin of the Pubs in Az.

McCains would start a civil war.

Ducey’s thinking is that the piss-poor candidate McSally will lose in 2020 and HE can then run against the Democrat winner in 2022.

She is a Retired AF Colonel who flew A-10’s in Combat. As a former Infantryman, I can attest that the A-10 was one of our best friends and I salute her for her service and wish her well in the Senate.

Great idea, appoint a loser who couldn’t win a seat in a mostly red state.

Thr mob has no interest in gladiators that were once at its mercy.
