The climate alarmists need to understand that the shielding and blocking effect of greenhouse gases works in both directions: it substantially reduces the flow of energy into the earth's surface from the sun during daytime, and also slows down the release of energy from the earth's surface at night. So the main impact of greenhouse gases is to lower the daytime high temperatures and raise the nighttime lows, thereby moderating the earth's temperature and making our planet much more inhabitable by humans and all forms of life. Also, CO2 is a very ineffective greenhouse gas and even doubling the CO2 level in our atmosphere will not have any significant effect on average temperatures throughout the year. OH, NOES!!! Back to the future, 1976, man is causing global freezing. While it's true that the earths average temperature is cooling, it is because of inactivity of sun spots, nothing to do with your back yard grill.

According to Joe Bastardi water vapor’s impact upon atmospheric temperature is the exact opposite.
That's true. But the incoming shortwave energy is not blocked by greenhouse gases. The earth's surface has to remove a ton of heat from the sun. The heat removal is slowed by greenhouse gases. More greenhouse gas means less heat removal so the surface temperature rises.

That's true, but water vapor varies depending on prevailng weather which is the main modulator of climate.

If that were the whole story we would see large swings in the 11/22 year cycles, but we don't. The main effect of the sun is to modulate the weather which can warm or cool or have no net global effect. The main modulator of weather is geography which for our timescales is fixed. Our current geography leads to our permanent ice age with short interglacials like the one we are in. It also leads to CO2 starvation, mainly from the weathering of rocks on the Himalayas and other relatively new mountain ranges.
It is that complete understanding of climate that leads to the conclusion that CO2 is good, warming is good, etc.
I can confirm that CO2 is a great cooling gas. When we were floating off the coast of the RVN looking for targets and the outside temp was 115 and the old AC wasn’t chugging along so good, you could grab a can of bathwater hot Coke and shoot it for five seconds with a CO2 fire extinguisher and that sucker would be chilled to the max.

Problem is global warming theory also predicts a tropopause “hotspot” which is NOT happening.
We have all heard it that CO2 emissions are causing global warming and the sea will rise 20+ feet. The earth is doomed even if there has been climate changes numinous climate changes time during the history of the earth. Maybe Gore should look at what the roll of CO2 in the atmosphere is before he tries to eliminate it. The sun is the major driver of the earth climate system not Al Gore and CO2. As we reduce CO2 there will be an increase of solar rays the reaching the earth and less plant growth. And both you and Dr. Soon are wrong. There are a huge number of things that affect climate, many of which we simply have not yet discovered. I don't believe in the simplistic picture of global warming as portrayed by the "the science is settled crowd" simply because the system is so hugely complex.

I know a little bit about global warming. It is happening. CO2 is a warming gas in the troposhere. It is not a crisis. It is an excuse for more socialism.
That said, there is an obvious and predicted reason for stratospheric cooling. The stratosphere is heated both by infrared light from the sun *AND* by infrared radiation from the earth, particularly at night. Increased CO2 in the lower atmosphere, the layer called the troposphere, reflects some of that infrared heat radiation back to earth so it does not reach the upper atmosphere, the stratospheric layer and above and therefore they cool off.
You also have to understand that all infrared is not equal. the atmosphere with CO2 reflects some wavelengths from the sun back into space and that energy never reaches earth. But the select wavelengths that reach the ground and warm it are transformed into heat wavelengths that CO2 reflects from the sun, except when those wavelengths come from the ground, they are reflected by the CO2 back to the ground.
