Yorkshire Post ^ | December 11, 2018 | David Behrens

Posted on 12/11/2018 5:39:53 PM PST by Zirondelle76

He is as familiar to American maritime students as Admiral Lord Nelson is to ours – not least for having uttered the immortal words, “Surrender? I have not yet begun to fight” as his ship sank off the Yorkshire coast. But while John Paul Jones went down in history as the father of the US Navy, the final secret of the stricken Bonhomme Richard is only now beginning to emerge from its watery grave.

[ Marine archeology - love it! ]

Is anyone here a Marine Biologist?

Good news on the find, though.

The Brits aren't bitter: "John Paul Jones was a Scottish pirate"..

And no, he didn't "take over" the HMS Serapis: he beat her in a fair fight!

Social Justice Warriors will eventually demand that it be destroyed. It represents a true knowledge of history.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Throckmorton
Edgerton Alvord Throckmorton (July 30, 1928 – June 5, 1990), known as Peter Throckmorton, was an American photojournalist and a pioneer underwater archaeologist, frequently described as the Father of Underwater Archaeology. Throckmorton was a founding member of the Sea Research Society and served on its Board of Advisors until his death in 1990. He was also a trustee for NUMA and was an instructor at Nova Southeastern University.

Every time I hear of a discovery I think of Peter. I was lucky enough to work with him aboard “Seaview” for a couple of seasons in the Bahamas.

Cool!

“the name of Flamborough Head is as embedded in US schoolbooks as Gettysburg.”
Well, no. Not gonna be the tourists dollars they imagine.

Great battle though!

I thought John Bonhomme and John Paul Jones played on the Cat Stevens. I'll have to refer to "Astounding Tales of the Sea."

I think they served on The Ella Fitzgerald.

It was wrecked, later. (Astonishing Tales of the Sea!)

How many do you lose on a normal cruise? 50? 60?

The revelation, at a meeting in Filey, before an invited audience of 100, has set off a scramble to claim the land for tourism, with the lucrative US market in sight.
