California officially becomes first in nation mandating solar power for new homes

California became the first state in the nation on Dec. 5 to require homes built in 2020 and later be solar powered.

...the California Building Standards Commission (BSC) voted unanimously to add energy standards approved last May by another panel to the state building code.

“These provisions really are historic and will be a beacon of light for the rest of the country,” said Kent Sasaki, one of six commissioners voting for the new energy code. “(It’s) the beginning of substantial improvement in how we produce energy and reduce the consumption of fossil fuels.”

The new provisions are expected to dramatically boost the number of rooftop solar panels in CA. ...builders took out permits for 115,000 new homes in 2017, half for single-family homes.

Wednesday’s action upholds a vote by another body, the California Energy Commission, seeking to fulfill a decade-old goal to make the state reliant on cleaner, alternative energy. The energy panel’s vote was subject to final approval by the BSC.

The BSC was limited to reviewing the energy panel’s rulemaking process, not the content of the standards. Commissioners said the process was more than sufficient, with 35 meetings, hearings and webinars held over a 15-month period. The energy panel received more than 3,000 comments from over 100 stakeholders, officials said.

While nobody spoke Wednesday in opposition to the new provisions, the commission received more than 300 letters from around the state opposing the solar mandate because of the added cost.

Energy officials estimated the provisions will add $10,000 to the cost of building a single-family home, about $8,400 from adding solar and about $1,500 for making homes more energy-efficient. But those costs would be offset by lower utility bills over the 30-year lifespan of the solar panels.

Will our own “Gilet Jaunes” arise to protest this insanity? Or will people decide to leave the state? Or not move here in the first place? Or never move from their existing homes?

Will our Masters require solar to be retrofitted if you remodel your home? How much of a "remodel"? If you change a faulty light switch, will they make you install solar?

The estimate of adding $10,000 to the price of a new average single family home is utterly ridiculous.

The argument that "we need to force you to save money in the long run" is the same tired argument leftists have used to push automobile fuel economy standards on us for decades. "You MUST buy these tiny, high-mileage econoboxes you don't like because you will save a lot of money over the life of the car."

I never heard that this was being proposed, that hearings were being held, or that comments were being sought. Apparently not many people heard about this dark-of-night plan because they got only 300 letters opposing it.

making you buy things you don’t want and preventing you from buying other things that are perfectly legal (ie second amendment items)

Wait until you see firemen let these places burn rather than risk their lives getting electrocuted on the roofs...

Enviro mandates are evidence of hostility to the middle class.

Illegal and unconstitutional. This law is a seizure of a power they don’t have. Obviously they will get away with it, and move on to more intrusive and abusive laws.

CA is what the left wants to do to the whole country.

They do this in NJ with Cesspools, if you need a plumbing permit and still have a old cesspool style septic, you are required to change it out to a modern septic system. Or no permit. So people just do the work themselves and don’t bother with a permit.

If you sell a property in NJ with a cesspool you or the buyer is required by law to replace it before contract or 30 days after sale if the buyer is going to replace it.

And how much money from the solar power industry has found itself into the coffers of Rat politicians?

California officially becomes first in nation mandating solar power for new homes

Does that include all the new homes pitched under highway overpasses and on the sidewalks and in the public parks and private back yards of California?

Dow Corning sells roofing shingles that are solar powered. I dont know how they compare price wise to solar panels but they seem to offer a similar look.

The solar power industry isn’t even close to being standardized yet. But the gubmint never let that stand in their way.

Ultimately, it’ll be cheaper to hire guards that shoot any government official or building inspector approaching your home. Plenty of illegals in CA to fill that bill AND they won’t be prosecuted.

This must be a good idea or else the government wouldn’t have to mandate it.

“Hostility to the middle class”

Exactly right. The rich do t care about the money to pay for these toys. The poor are subsidized. The middle class is screwed because the elites want to “save the earth.”

It’s interesting that the French middle class has risen up so swiftly and firmly against the elitists and their hatred of carbon. It is long overdue here.
