“The stores do that intentionally for effect to counter their bright lights. An honest salesman will tell you so. “

On initial set-up, my new OLED had me choose whether the use would be at home or in-store. I chose the former, obviously. But even with that, the default options are pretty much maximum OLED brightness and close to maximum contrast. It certainly “pops” and may wow people at first, but it’s not what I would call a good picture.

The motion-smoothing crap is turned on by default for just about every preset video mode on the TV. I don’t like it, and it’s not just the extra frames. It’s that they’re interpolated frames, which means sometimes they show things which just aren’t part of the actual action. You end up with motion that falls into the “uncanny valley” where you can’t put your finger on exactly what is wrong with it, but you know there’s something wrong.

Speaking of motion-smoothing, I had that enabled while watching the credits of some show that also had some other stuff going on on the screen, perpendicular to the motion of the text. “Motionflow” made an absolute mess of it, full of artifacts. Interpolation frames that aren’t there is just a bad idea, IMO.

I just got an LG OLED, too - 55” - and I love the colors and black levels on it. As you say, the up-scaling is also very good on it. The only thing now is I’m wondering if I should have ponied up the extra $$$ and got the 65”.

"If I am watching a film with a wider aspect ration than 16:9 (e.g. Ben-Hur, Lawrence of Arabia), I will have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen."

Yes. Those movies were the early days of Cinemascope that were shot in mostly 2.35:1 ratio and will still have black bars. Any other shot in 4:3 will still be shown in that ratio on new displays, unless re-mixed to fit 16:9 which will cut off a lot of the image. However, my 4k LG OLED up-scales the resolution and colors to an amazing picture. I watched the original True Grit in 4:3 and it looked like a new movie other than the bars.

Interestingly, when HD first came out, directors started shooting in the same 16:1 ratio. Other than small movies like RomComs, the big action movies are now shot in the Panavision (Scope) 2.35:1 of those days or some varying degree of that aspect ratio. Then you get the bars again since they are shot for a wider theatrical screen than all HD tv's with 16:9.

Since we never go to theaters anymore, are the non-reflective curtains still in front of the screen so the projectionist can adjust for aspect ratio?

Also, I have a 3 yr. 16:9 projector and 16:9 110" screen. I know you can buy a movable lense for the projector for 2.35:1 viewing, but would have to replace the screen to fill that ratio which are available. Haven't kept up, are there fair priced 4k 2,35:1 projectors on the market? We stopped using the Theater because I got tired of the grayish bars and the poor contrast in night skies and shadows. It wasn't close to contrast of the our new 4k OLED nor our old HD rear-projection.

"I just bought a 55" 4k uhd from walmart for $265... & free shipping."

Was that a price typo? Sheesh our 4k LG OLED 55" cost around $2800 a year ago. What brand and is it OLED tech? OLED is the now best for contrast and color. Guess I should believe it since electronics always go down in price.

Just looked at the 4k displays at Walmart. Yes, you can get an basic LED 4k for your cost, but OLED smart tv's are much much more. Still, yours is a major improvement over the original HD. Enjoy.

"...it's led not oled."

That's what I thought. I would think newer basic LED 4k displays have a little better blacks, but nowhere near the blacks/contrast of OLED tech. Still with all the extra pixels, you should have great resolution. For the money, you have a much better display than original HD.

Say what you want about Cruise but I will say this and that is when he does a movie he puts everything into it.

I finally saw MI6 the other night and was blown away with the stunts he did. For a guy about 55 he is in the kind of shape I wish I was in. From the stunt jumping to one building to another, the parachute HALO jump to learning to fly a helicopter for the finale it was impressive.

I wish the guy would leave Scientology and find peace somewhere else. At least he doesn’t talk politics any.

I knew there was a problem with my TV settings when I saw him playing the part of Jack Reacher. Jack was 6’5” and 250 lbs. The books were very involved in his size. Cruise is 5’7” and weighs about 150.

They are. Motion smoothing is crap. Whoever came up with it should get punched in the throat.

indeed.

Tom is 100% correct about this.

I bought a big Samsung plasma set right before they quit making them a few years go. It had amazing reviews for picture quality ... when i turned mine own the first time, the picture looked like sepia tones... i was like, WTF, and came close to returning it, but instead decided to first look at the picture settings ... the first thing i found was a picture setting whose default was “ecosetting” ... i changed that to normal, and suddenly the screen lit up like a Christmas tree, with brilliant, saturated colors and deep, deep blacks ... that one default setting alone had crippled an amazing piece of technology ... why on earth are manufacturers deliberately crippling their brilliant, expensive products like that?

“I recently bought a new OLED TV (LG), and when I first turned it on I thought maybe I had made a mistake buying it. Dark colors were totally crushed into black. But once I fiddled with the settings and got it the way I like it? Beautiful.”

that’s good to know ... been thinking about buying an OLED ... my only problem is that i’ve got one of the last plasma models Samsung ever made and it’s pretty hard to justify upgrading it ...

Tom is concerned that you are not watching his movies on your television correctly.

No matter how you adjust your TV, "Legend" is still dreck.

You basically can’t buy a non-4k larger LCD/LED now - it’s become the default. The OLEDs are still a lot more expensive. I just paid CDN$1999 for my 55”, and that was $1000 off the list price. I’m still considering returning it to Costco and getting the 65”, but it’s another $1000 (CDN$).
