Shock at attack on Paris’ Arc de Triomphe during ‘Yellow Vest’ protest

One of France’s most revered monuments, the Arc de Triomphe, was stormed and vandalised on Saturday during the 'Yellow Vest' demonstrations, in one of the worst instances of unrest Paris has seen since the protests and riots of 1968.

The interior of the Arc de Triomphe, the 19th-century arch that towers over the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier at the western end of Champs Elysées, was ransacked. The statue of the Marianne, the symbol of the French republic, in display at the entrance of the Arc de Triomphe museum was smashed. A video shared on Facebook shows most of the front of the statue hacked off, while several other men, dressed with yellow vests, are being filmed repeatedly hitting other artefacts with hammers.

While protests degenerated in some places into scenes of destruction and fires, graffiti was scrawled over the Arc, reading “Macron resign” and “the yellow vests will triumph.”

When Trump visited France on Bastille Day 2017, he had quite the warm reception from crowds...including little children wearing MAGA hats...

No reverence or even regard for history? These aren’t allies.

The Yellow Vest is symbolic.

The French people who own cars are required to keep a yellow vest in their trunk. That’s a safety mandate from the government. The French middle class are the ones that own cars.

This is the French middle class rising up against the leftist tyrants.

I support the middle class having a voice and using it to effect change. I don’t like them destroying works of art or desecrating monuments to the veterans of their wars though. It accomplishes nothing other than to make it easy to portray them as a crazed, violent mob. It’s not good.

The middle class is rising up by fouling their own nests?
There is much about France of today that I don’t understand.
I presumed that most of the destruction was being done by rejected asylum seekers or uninvited refugees who are jealous of the well to do. Greece is having such problems right now.

Kind of sad. They should smash Macron and the globalists instead.

They do it different in France. This is the only way they can get their voices heard. There’s a history of this kind of revolution in that society that predates and in my opinion sired the American revolution.

These people had my sympathy, but not if they are going to act like violent lefties.

There is a good chance that the Marxists and anarchists have infiltrated the more conservative protest groups using the Yellow Vests as cover (some were wearing the Antifa black face masks/helmets like those used in the US).

Another article said “youths from the suburbs” had joined the rioting.

That means Arabs. They just like to riot and destroy things, and they have no reverence for French history.

Destroying monuments (and much worse) is how it works. Has been, is and will be.

What is past are the days of giving a freak how easy it is for leftists to disparage the good guys.

Not at all.

The black block anarchists, what we call Antifa, has been around in Europe for decades and they swarm out and destroy at every opportunity, hiding among whatever group is in the street.

The "Yellow jackets" are primarily visible on weekends because they are working class citizens much as flyover country middle class who have been ignored by the limousine liberal globalists who have dominate French politics for too long. The protests started early in November as a protest against the rising fuel taxes which harm the middle class but they have grown into much more.

Macron campaigned as a centrist/moderate but it didn't take that wolf long to crawl out of his sheep's clothing. Now he thinks he is the new clever little Napoleon who will ween France of their use of hydrocarbons by taxing them to death.

The Muzzies are keeping their heads low and conspicuously absent from the protests because they know full well that the need for more revenue to support their lazy as#es is a big part of the problem.

Macron's approval level is dipping into the low 20's, actually behind Le Pen who lost to him in the last election. Of course the destruction is repugnant and criminal but don't fall for the Euro MSM blaming the working class "yellow jackets" for the crimes committed by the anarchists. Prosecute the anarchist; listen to the newly awakened middle class who won't stand for the globalist tripe much longer.

Some good reading for ya.

Not even the Nazis destroyed Paris’s art. They stole it, but didn’t destroy it.

The Taliban blew up ancient Buddhist cliff carvings.
Draw your own comparison.

I doubt that truck drivers upset about the rising cost of fuel would deign to think destruction of Parisian art and artifacts makes for a fair bargain.

"France will suspend fuel tax hikes which were due in January following protests across the country...."

Hahaha....didn't take long for the limousine liberal globalists to start tossing chum in the water, hoping to calm the protests. I hope it doesn't work.

I hope the middle class come out on the highways and streets in ever bigger numbers, telling Macron they are fed up with his immigration, energy policies and one Euro nation ideas which are destroying France. The French are strong nationalists at heart, have been for a very long time, and a central government ruling all of Europe are the wet dreams of May, Macron and Merkel. Vote the bast#rds out while you still can.
