Stopping the Socialist Resurgence
Wall Street Journal ^ | November 28, 2018 | Karl Rove

Posted on 11/29/2018 6:37:08 AM PST by reaganaut1

Sen. Bernie Sanders knows what he wants. In a Washington Post op-ed last week, the democratic socialist from Vermont laid out a legislative agenda for the 116th Congress’s first 100 days. Among the dizzying array of proposals Mr. Sanders pushed were his signature “Medicare for All” bill, tuition-free college, student-debt relief, tax increases requiring “wealthy people and large corporations to begin paying their fair share” and a $15 minimum wage indexed to “median wage growth,” not inflation.

Others in the Democratic Party’s increasingly influential democratic-socialist wing are pressing for their own major legislation to pass the House, even if it will go nowhere in the Republican Senate. Rep.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, for example, wants a “Green New Deal.” Sounding too much like a Maoist functionary, she describes it as a “national, industrial, economic mobilization plan” to make America carbon neutral.

Ms. Ocasio-Cortez’s plan would end U.S. use of nuclear energy and fossil fuels—coal, oil and gas—within 10 years. She promises to upgrade “every residential and industrial building for state-of-the-art energy efficiency, comfort and safety” and “virtually eliminate poverty” by guaranteeing “a living wage job to every person who wants one” while mitigating “deeply entrenched racial, regional and gender-based inequalities in income and wealth” through a universal basic income, universal health care and other measures.

epublicans must resist the temptation simply to dismiss these radical Democratic ideas with wisecracks and insults. Enthusiasm for socialism and antagonism to capitalism have surged among millennials and Gen Z-ers. State-run economies may have been discredited by the 20th century, but that doesn’t mean new forms of socialism can’t gain a following. Republicans must do the hard work of updating old arguments.

Taking a stand against the ideas of the Democratic Party’s ascendant left can help congressional Republicans rehabilitate their image with voters.

In addition to explaining what is wrong with socialism, Republicans should also stop illegal immigration and reduce legal immigration that imports more socialists, something Rove has not recognized. Groups that do not have the skills or culture to be as successful as other groups tend to find socialism attractive.

Bernie...Bernie...Bernie...you blithering idiot. Where do you suppose those rich corporations will get the money to pay your higher taxes or a $15/hr minimum wage? It will come from the higher prices your constituents will have to pay because of your stupid economic policies. You’ve got the economic IQ of a bag of hammers.

If Karl Rove is in charge of fending off Socialism we shall surely all be singing The Internationale by this time next year.

tax increases requiring “wealthy people and large corporations to begin paying their fair share”

I agree with The Bern about this. They should pay no more than 15%, just like everyone else. This also implies that the roughly 50% of Americans that pay no Federal income tax, should start!

Building a southern border wall to keep as much freeloading human riff raff as possible out of the USA would "rehabilitate their image with voters".

Tempting to think about just letting them do it all...hastening the collapse so a new country can be created out of the remains. Without Trump, that would have been about the only choice, after Obama we were right on the precipice...

Any one of these proposals, if they are passed by the House, will either not make it through the Senate or will be vetoed by the President. Go ahead and waste your time, Democrats.

For Nuke to replace Coal, Nuke would have to grow by 3x.

I am of the opinion that the US should sponsor the development of 3 or 4 classes / templates (power output levels) of Thorium reactors. Perhaps a gigawatt as the largest class, and a 10 megawatt at the smallest.

I think there are an alarming number of Republicans who can’t intelligently rebut AOC. They may be older and smart enough to speak in hollow political clichés, but can they really detangle the mess that is AOC’s proposals?

Alas, they’re wasting OUR time, since they aren’t working on things that need to be addressed. Think of how much wasted money, time, and energy has been spent by Mueller and add Kavanaugh’s hearing on top of that...then add 200 days of “recess”. Man, what a job, plus retirement benefits for life even after one term and special laws while you’re in (e.g., can’t be convicted of insider trading). It’s a racket.

Nearly-universal ignorance of simple economics, thanks to the public education system and self-serving politicians, will play a large part in the coming collapse.

They can rebut her, but they choose not to.
Because:

1) She’s a minority
2) She has a vagina
3) They are afraid of the media calling them a bunch of mean-spirited racists

The people want closed borders and nationalized health care.

In other words, they want national socialism.

Eventually a party will give it to them - but probably not the GOP or the Democrats.

I think personally it would take decades to hollow out the country to the point of a Venezuela-style collapse. We really are THAT wealthy. Certainly I don’t expect to live to see it.

This is the kind of thing that Campus Reform would put on a petition and get students to sign while they take a video of the geniuses as they sign it.

She wants to shut down nukes, not make more to replace coal. In 10 years.

EVERYONE must pay SOMETHING.

Even 1% lets “The Poor” have some skin in the game. People who pay nothing are only too quick to raise taxes that don’t affect them.

And if 1% taxation hurts them, good! That way, they’ll feel the pain of a tax increase just like the rest of us.
