Retired Gen. McChrystal: Trump's attacks on military service members are 'disturbing'

Retired Gen. Stanley McChrystal on Wednesday denounced President Trump's attacks on military service members, including the late Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and retired Adm. William McRaven, who oversaw the operation that killed Osama bin Laden.

"His discussions on Bill McRaven, as well as his previous discussions on John McCain and others have been something that’s deeply disturbing to a lot of thoughtful people,” McChrystal said on ABC's Powerhouse Politics podcast. “The fact that he would take on people in this vitriolic manner, I think is pretty upsetting to people."

"And the fact that he would be dismissive of the kinds of service that people like John McCain and others have given is also disturbing," McChrystal added. "I don’t think it builds up the kind of trust that military people depend upon."

The president earlier this month aggressively criticized McRaven, who over oversaw the 2011 operation that killed bin Laden. After McRaven called Trump's antagonistic relationship with the media a "threat to democracy," Trump accused him of political bias towards Democrats and suggested the U.S. took too long to hunt down bin Laden.

The McRaven controversy came as Trump has been fielding continued criticism over his relationship with the military, as his detractors slam his comments about prominent veterans, his decision to skip a visit to a World War I cemetery in France last month and the fact that Trump has not yet visited troops overseas.

McChrystal, who just released a new book called "Leaders: Myth and Reality" about prominent figures throughout history, told ABC that he does not agree with Trump's recent assertion that no one has been more "with" the military than he has. Trump has frequently pointed to administration's large budget for the military as a sign of his unflagging support.

“[Funding is] not the best metric of whether you support the military," McChrystal said. "The size of the defense budget is not a measure of patriotism or connection with those in service."

“I don’t think that President Trump has developed as deep — a real connection of trust — with the military as perhaps he thinks he has," he added.

Seems Obama butt boy retired Gen McChrystal doesn't like the way our now Commander in Chief President Trump speaks out calling it like it is.

I would be interested to know how many of our military lost their lives and/or were seriously wounded due to McChrystal's ridiculous tightening of the rules of engagement in Afghanistan

Anyone who praises McCain is probably a traitor like he was. That’s my default position until other info, if any, persuedes me otherwise.

Any former service member is supposed to be immune from any political criticism, even fifty plus years later?

I notice that all of these left-wing McSurnames are sticking together. What Son of Chrystal, Son of Raven and Son of Cain have in common are not good things.

Shaun Waterman - The Washington Times - June 23, 2010

President Obama said Wednesday he had accepted the resignation of Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal as commander of U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan, bringing to an ignominious end the storied but sometimes controversial career of one of the country’s top soldiers.

Mr. Obama, who angrily summoned Gen. McChrystal to Washington after the general and several aides disparaged senior members of the administration in a series of interviews with Rolling Stone magazine, said he had accepted the resignation “with considerable regret, but also with certainty that it is the right thing for our mission in Afghanistan, for our military and for our country.”

The president said he was nominating Gen. David H. Petraeus, the current head of U.S. Central Command, to take over from Gen. McChrystal “which will allow us to maintain the momentum and leadership that we need to succeed.”

The kenyan humiliated McDeepState. Recalled him from his post half way around the world and made him give up his sword at the White Hut. Now he carries water for Democrats? Gob-smacking.

McChrystal completely botched Afghanistan. I was there during his reign. His immortal actions included trying to turn the entire ISAF into Special Operations elements, killing AAFES resupply due to border traffic logistics constraints (note that we were continually being robbed blind at the Pak/Af border), and getting our people killed by forcing adherence to highly restrictive rules of engagement.

It was such a blessing when that Rolling Stone article sunk him and his crew of jackwagons.

I’m beginning to think the rot in our military goes considerably below these Obama generals due to a generation of PC indoctrination.

McChrystal: ...deeply disturbing to a lot of thoughtful people...

Indeed. Thoughtful people are often disturbed by the knock-down street fighting in the political world - into which McCain and Raven ventured after leaving military service.

With regard to Trump, however, more thoughtful people than ever in recent decades are thinking, "Thank God we have a street fighter like Trump."
