Those of you looking to download the Tumblr app (Android, iOS) on your iPhone or iPad are unable to get it for now. But the app's vanishing act isn't the result of a technical issue or glitch. Through independent sources, Download.com learned that the app was removed due to child pornography that got past the site's filters.

When Download.com presented these findings to Tumblr, a company spokesperson responded with the following statement:

"NCMEC spokesperson also explained the specific steps that Electronic Service Providers such as Tumblr take to try to block child pornography.

"NCMEC offers several voluntary initiatives to ESPs who choose to take extra steps to reduce the distribution of online sexual abuse material on their systems. One of NCMEC's initiatives involves facilitating the sharing of hashes of apparent child pornography images among ESPs. Some ESPs and social networks will participate in this initiative to reduce child sexual exploitation images online and some ESPs will rely on other programs and methods to remove such illegal content from their servers."

It’s mostly photos, gifs, short video clips.

I look at classic cars, historical stuff, landscapes and scenery, jeep, and military stuff mostly. I post a vehicle project item once in a while.

I would conjecture that it’s much closer to backpages, going on the sort of excerpts are thrown out when it appears on internet searches.

I think you have to have an app or something to see stuff, so maybe its more file sharing?

My budget tablet doesn’t have enough memory to install apps for a bunch of social media crap.

But it’s STILL legal to have cartoons depicting semi pedophile pictures.

i dont know what crosses the line or not but pedophile cartoons seem pretty bad too.

Think if it more like Facebook - but with pictures instead of text (so more like Instagram but the photos are generally of things and places, not selfies (though they’re there too)
