Carlos Ghosn, Nissan’s Chairman, Arrested Over Financial Misconduct
New York Times ^ | November 19, 2018 | Motoko Rich

The Nissan chairman, Carlos Ghosn, was arrested on Monday after an internal company investigation found that he had underreported his compensation to the Japanese financial authorities for several years.

Nissan said it was cooperating with Japanese prosecutors. It also said that it had opened its inquiry after a whistle-blower alleged that Mr. Ghosn had been misrepresenting his salary as well as using company assets for personal use. Both he and a director, Greg Kelly, who was also accused of misconduct, were taken in by authorities, the company said.

It is a remarkable tumble for Mr. Ghosn, who arrived at Nissan in 1999 after Renault, the French carmaker, bought a large stake in the Japanese company. It may prove to be an ignominious final chapter in the career of one of the most powerful and highly regarded executives in the automotive industry.

Earlier in the day, Nissan said in a statement that Mr. Ghosn and Mr. Kelly had been involved in misconduct and recommended that both be removed from their positions. Neither Mr. Ghosn nor Mr. Kelly could be reached for comment.

Mr. Kelly, who spent years working in Nissan’s human resources department, was appointed to the automaker’s board in 2012, the first American to hold the role.

According to Nissan’s securities filings, Mr. Ghosn was paid 735 million yen, about $6.5 million, in cash in 2017, down 33 percent from the ¥1.1 billion he was paid in 2016.

The disclosure raised questions about Mr. Ghosn’s role as chief executive of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Although he stepped down from the top job at Nissan last year, Mr. Ghosn, 64, has remained at the top of the world’s largest automotive alliance and told reporters as recently as last month that he planned to stay in that post until 2020.

Ghosn has done a truly remarkable job of turning Nissan around. Under his leadership the entire Nissan lineup was revamped successfully.

Really? Because the Nissans I’ve owned were junk.

Ok, but your experience is an exception.

Rogue, best selling in it’s class, beating out Honda and Toyota

https://pamplinmedia.com/wh/395091-288428-nissan-rogue-is-the-best-selling-suv-in-america

Their Altima and Sentra are consistently in the top ten saleswise.

Also

Reliability Index have put Nissan ninth out of 32 brands for reliability, with a reliability index of 88. This is much better than the industry average

Cheatsheet also score Nissan highly, reporting that Nissan models can reach 195,593 miles before hitting zero value. This puts them sixth in their table

How many Nissans have you owned ? Why did you keep buying them if they were junk. I have owned or leased 10 Nissans and I have had nothing but quality vehicles. The Altima set the standard for quality and low price 25 years ago and still holds that distinction.

Yep, Datsun successfully took on the mantle of made from recycled beer cans that had been missing from Japanese cars for a while.

They did not help themselves with execrable marketing and the perceived target audience.

I've owned Nissans since 1987. None of them were junk. What do you base that on?

I've had Altimas, a Maxima, and now a Murano. Wife has a Rogue. Both of us always happy with the Nissan product and we haven't had to call AAA for a tow since 1986.

The Murrano was complete garbage in particular. Repeatedly had a problem with the drive train. Its a widely known problem I found out later.

Have 2 close friends that had the 350zx. One went around and around with the Nissan dealership when the motor blew up twice. The other one with the 350Z had to have the tires REPLACED every 3500 miles because the suspension was poorly designed. The DEALER admittedly to it and they were replacing the tires, for free, every 3500 miles. He finally got tired of that and got rid of it.

I myself had 2 1990 300zx Nissans and they chewed up high performance, expensive tires in less than 2 years. And the Sentra I had bought for my daughter was always overheating.

My mechanic finally asked me why kept buying those POSs. I do understand this is anecdotal and I didn’t buy any of these vehicles new, but both the 350ZX owners’ were bought new. My sister also had a 350Z she bought new and she loved it.

My Murano is pushing 100,000 miles. Never had an issue outside of routine maintenance. Still on its second set of tires which will get replaced soon. Still, it got me home just fine in the snowstorm last week. Going to likely upgrade to the 2020 model end of next year.

I have a 2005 Nissan Frontier. It was the first year of the style change. 13 years later, a 2018 Frontier looks almost exactly the same as my 2005.

Some are saying Frontier needs an upgrade. But they are selling pretty well. My understanding that part of why they still sell well is the lower cost due to not much upgrades in regards to techie stuff. One, that helps keep the cost down, and two, a lot of light truck buyers don't want a lot of bells and whistles, they just want a reliable vehicle to haul stuff around in--new chair, maybe some lumber from the home improvement store. They don't need it to have DVD players and all that stuff.

I'm happy with it, and it has been a reliable vehicle for me. I also drive a 2015 Murano. Love the looks, has been reliable so far. Don't like the tech on it/console layout. Horrible.

So you have NO IDEA how these vehicles were treated before you bought them and yet you trash the brand despite documented proof of their reliability?

Really?

My newest neighbor that recently moved in had 2 Frontiers. One of them has to be 20 years old. He used to work at Nissan.

Yes, really. I said it was anecdotal. I’m allowed to say stuff, have conversations and such. That’s how it works here in America. You even say bad things about my F-250 if you want to!

I bought a Nissan Sentra SER back in the early 90’s. It was lame attempt at being called a pocket rocket by today’s standards. I drove it for about 10 years. If you can get 10 years out of a car with no major hassles, that is a good run.
The reason I didn’t buy another Nissan was I didn’t like the new owner’s tactics for repair and sales.

Nah, Ford is best selling truck in America from what I hear and maybe the world. Quality must be good if it is so successful.

Now you write a nice letter to that man from Nissan and tell him you are sorry for unfairly trashing his cars.
