Totally agree with both, NO taxpayer money to provide corporations to move to the state. Attract them the old fashioned way, low state taxes, competent workforce.

They’ll bail once the tax breaks end just like most of the other businesses taking advantage of the program all these years. Its basically corporate welfare.

Yes I was a little surprised that in choosing new headquarters Amazon was being offered big tax breaks. Like a sports team.

I believe that back in the 80’s, Bexar County in TX gave Levis a 10 year tax exemption on a new factory. Levis built the factory and ran it exactly 10 years and closed it when the tax kicked in.

Even the blind donkey occasionally finds an apple.

I trust Bezos and the DS will find ways to help her "grow" on the matter.

A bunch of FReepers disagreed and try to defend CRONY CAPITALISM. There is NO justification for giving TAX funds to Amazon.

What made the Amazon story such a joke is that they probably would have made the same decision about NYC and Virginia even if those states didn’t offer a penny in corporate welfare.

Its the socialist actually agreeing with the conservative. Any right thinking conservative realizes that “tax incentives” are a detrimental government intrusion into the free enterprise system. They give an advantage to politically well connected individuals and the cost is borne by higher taxes for most workers. Anyone surprised that the “progressive” multibillionaire Bezos who owns the propagandistic Washington Post gets his “deal” in Northern Virginia and Di Blasio’s New York. Few will benefit. Many will pay.

At this point Amazon should not need outside subsidies to afford to move or expand.

The difference is that Ocasio doesn’t know the economic impact of Amazon on tax payers. Even if she says she does, she...like...doesn’t.

Yep, NY gave away the City & State to get Amazon. Waited till after Election to drop this Deal...Taking over Citi Bank Tower in Queens to start in one of the hottest real estate locations in US. Why not Buffalo, or Rochester that needs jobs? That would have been a big plus to NY...

I see governments as a service provider. Not unlike AT&T for telcom, but government service is “incorporation” (and all the things that go with it like roads, courts, an educated workforce, etc).

Governments should compete for business, and may do so with lowest cost (tax rate) or best long term deal (tax rate + discounts) and many other factors. I’m sure Amazon doesn’t pay AT&T the same as my small business, and when the contract with AT&T runs out they may switch to Sprint (maybe before the contract runs out, just like me). AT&T will invest in new equipment at a large expense to them (often part of the contract) to land or keep a huge contract and so should a government.

If governments were run like a service provider, I’d have no problems with this deal. My problem with the deal is that the process is full of bribes and unrealistic assumptions by government workers who won’t be held responsible. And taxpayers are likely to get screwed when the government makes investments that do not get the expected ROI. But, in theory governments should make large investments to attract clients/customers (and liberals love “investing” taxpayer money for much more questionable programs).

Whatever happened to equal protection of the laws? (One tax rate for me and a different tax rate for thee.)

Think of Amazon in the same way you think of Facebook and Google. In the beginning, they provide free services to get customers and advertisers, with no censorship. Once they achieve defacto monopoly status, they lower the boom on all those they disagree with (conservatives and non-progressives), not leave those with an opportunity to duplicate their success elsewhere.

Once Amazon is fully monopolized on the Internet as the premiere site for selling stuff, they will then dictate their policies and start throttling conservatives. First, the books, then music, and other media. Then perhaps by region. Are you in a red county in Texas? Throttled delivery and fulfillment times. In Solid communist Santa Monica? It’s the speedway for you.

Then, over time, they throttle EVERYONE, little by little, but noticeable. Only the affluent that are left (the middle class becoming more and more squeezed downward), they are the only ones whom are left with now-normal service. Finally, the true dystopia starts: Denial of sales to people based on whom Amazon allows. Don’t have Alexa on in every room, vehicle, and even patio 100% of the time? No service. Say anything that Alexa reports as subversive, say, support for the US Constitution? No service.

This is the trend, folks.
