Eliminating the criminal possession and misuse of firearms (or knives, or matches) via legislation is essentially impossible. One might just as well argue that we cut to the chase, and pass a law mandating immortality.

It might be amusing to transport the author back in time, a century or so (something just as feasible as eliminating all guns, or making every one of us just like Connor MacLeod). Firearms were much more common in her part of the world during her great grandmother's time. Were it possible, I imagine something like the following occurring, almost immediately:

Author: "OH MY GOD, HE'S GOT A GUN!!!"

British gentleman: "Since I am carrying one of Holland's better .375 Belted Rimless Magnum Nitro Express rifles, and am unable to assist you, would you please - quickly, if possible - remove your hand from my breeches? There's a good lass!"
