You’re probably going to be required by the time this uniform is required of everybody (2028).

The adoption of the beret by the whole Army was an insult to SF.

Weird thing is, I don’t think even 10% of SF really LIKE the beret....

If they’re so great, why didn’t they just keep them? Military uniforms shouldn’t have to be changed with fashion trends.

The pink and greens evolved into the Army greens, which lasted a long time until recently, when the Army decided to go with the formal 1800s-cavalry-like uniform for everyday garrison wear. Stupid ass decision which they are now basically reverting.

Bingo.

It’s like the NBA and all their “special” uniforms.

Except fans are volunteering to part with their money in that case.

It was actually an insult to the Rangers, who exclusively wore the black beret until then. Now they have to wear a tan-colored beret to distinguish themselves.

The beret is a lousy piece of field headgear.

It’s hot and doesn’t shade your face.

Looks great in Garrison if prepped and worn correctly, otherwise you look like a dork.

Shinseki ruined the prestige of the black beret worn Army Rangers by making it standard Army issue when he was CSA. Rangers went to the tan variety as a result.

“A peacetime army changes its uniform.”

There are several dichotomies at work here.

The first is the argument between “militarism”, which is parade ground fashion, full of look pretties and shiny awards, with antiquated rifles you can toss about; and “militancy”, or extreme utilitarianism, where decor in minimal and subdued, and every part of the uniform is practical.

The second argument is for a uniform for regular soldiers and variations for elite soldiers. Elites must maintain high morale to be effective; but regular soldier commanders do not want to dampen the morale of their soldiers.

The third argument is the circumstances of wear: peacetime, conventional war, or unconventional war. One type of uniform does not work for all three.

Pinks and greens were still the ROTC uniform when I entered in 55. They changed to Greens about the next year I think but I switched to AFROTC cause I liked the uniform better and my brother was an Airman. I had no clue I would retire from the USAF after 22 years active.

The Army giving the black beret to the entire army didn't really piss of those of us in Special Forces too much, as we kept our Green Berets. But the army in its infinite wisdom, or lack thereof, stole the Rangers Black Beret, and gave it to the entire army. The Rangers now wear a Tan Beret.

That sh!t bird Shenseiki was behind it, and rumor had it that he hated Rangers and slapped the Rangers in the face by stealing our Black Berets and giving them to mother army.

That being said, berets are hot, fail to keep the sun out of your eyes, or the rain off your face, but was proud to wear both the black, when I was in 2nd Ranger Bn, and the green when I moved on to SF.

As a WW2 aviation buff growing up, I always loved watching WW2 movies on TV and loved these uniforms. They were long gone by the 70s/80s when I was in my prime WW2 fascination. Something about the lighting used on sets made the jackets look brown, the pants look khaki. Loved the combo. Years later, when I realized the jackets were an olive drab and the pants were pink I was kinda shocked. Still love them but my imaginary uniform of the brown jacket with khaki pants still wins!

Military uniforms have to change with fashion trends or soldiers would still be wearing knee high pants, silk stocking, and tricorner hats. You also don’t want service members looking so old fashioned that they’re embarrassed to be seen in public. On the other hand, you’re right that change shouldn’t come as often as every Paris runway show.

They are still the uniform for Texas A&M Cadet Corps members as they were for me there in the late 50’s early 60’s.

Give the AF another year or two and they’ll be back to shorts, bush jackets, gray knee socks and pith helmets.
