World’s stinkiest fruit causes flight delay

An Indonesian airliner was delayed for an hour after passengers complained of an overpowering stench released from a load of the notorious thorny fruit durian, according to reports.

About 2 tons of the world’s stinkiest fruit was in the cargo hold of the Jakarta-bound Sriwijaya Air flight at Bengkulu in Sumatra, the BBC reported.

Boyke Ledy Watra, a reporter with Indonesia’s Antara news agency who was aboard the fetid flight, said passengers began arguing with the crew — with some almost coming to blows with flight attendants.

The airline eventually agreed to remove the offending fruit and the plane took off an hour behind schedule Monday morning.

Sriwijaya Air later insisted that it was not illegal to transport durian “as long as it is wrapped properly in accordance with flight regulations — carried inside the hold.”

Yeah, that’s an unfortunate parallel.

Hocking, as in ‘hocking your wares’. It’s what they call them.

I was carrying some in a plastic shopping bag down to a boat pier. I was careful to hold it out away from me. Slipped up, it brushed my calf. Three really nice racing stripes - bleeding like a stuck pig.

It is said the trees in the wild are protected by tigers, who like to eat the fruit as it drops. I don’t know how much truth there is to that.

They are sharp though.

Reaction to the fruit's odor seems to differ between people of European and Asian ancestry, but not necessarily always.

Once visiting a factory near Ipoh, Malaysia I was with one American (our factory manager) and two Malaysian employees driving back from lunch and we spotted a flat bed truck selling fresh durian by the roadside. The Malaysian guys asked if I'd ever tried it and I said no but that I had heard about it for years. So we stopped, my American colleague made sure to go about 30 yards upwind from the truck, they cut one open and extracted a gooey chunk for me to taste. "Hmmm, not bad". They chuckled and asked if I wanted another and I did. They seemed dumbfounded that I didn't puke. Flavor was super sweet and rich but didn't revolt me at all.

A couple weeks later I was back in the office and a production guy who'd been to the Malaysian plant came in and said "We heard you tried durian ... and that you ate two pieces". "Yep, it wasn't bad. A bit too sweet for my taste. But not bad." He just shook his head and walked out. Apparently it was a running joke, when the fruit was in season, for Malays to take visiting Americans out to taste durian. I think I disappointed them when they tried it on me.

Spent 30 years overseas in the oil business. You think that is getting out enough? Yes, I have bee in a Holiday Inn a few times, also. And I have eaten lots and lots of durian during my time overseas and continue doing it right here in Houston.

The only durian I’ve ever had is in Dallas. The stuff tastes quite good.

Have you ever been on a road trip in a van full of durian?

No. I eat it fresh or from frozen or freeze-dried. However, I have transported small pieces wrapped.

Two of my wife’s sister’s took some durian into their motel and put the waste into the hall garbage chute.

Someone called in a gas leak based on the odor and the motel was evacuated.

I’ve done so a few times, but you’re right, their safety records are terrible.

“Hawker,” not, “hocker.”

...and I happen now to love super-ripe Durian, but I certainly didn’t the first time I ate it decades ago...
