" Sears is purely consumer driven where IBM is mostly business driven. " Not completely relevant...
Excellent summary overall...
Your post clearly supports my "analogy"... If I am talking about rotting fruits smelling/tasting bad and headed to the trash can, does it matter if they are bananas, peaches, or apples?

The bleak future for IBM predicted by many such as myself when Linux was debated ad nauseum here on Free Republic back during the SCO lawsuit is continuiung to play out. Thanks to idiotic (traitorous?) decisions by IBM, China now has the fastest supercomputers in the world, and pays no licensing fees for any of them, and IBM is further down the road to obscurity.
This is a transparent last ditch attempt to save themselves by treating Red Hat as a lifeboat, but will surely just destroy the Red Hat fable in the process. Expect a revolt from some in the community about it and even boycots if Red Hat now. The final death throes will be when IBM starts charging exuberant support rates for the suddenly bug ridden free software just to make ends meet, just as theyve done with their other products.
