In conversation series, atmospheric scientist talks climate change and its impact on Dallas

Texas has been called the “disaster capital of the United States” by scientists, and that’s because Texas has any type of weather you can imagine.

Tornadoes, hailstorms, severe weather, dust storms, floods, droughts, blizzards, ice, hurricanes and wildfires are all possible in the Lone Star State.

“We get everything there is to get naturally because of our location,” Katharine Hayhoe said Wednesday night in the fourth installment of “Duets,” an ongoing conversation series hosted by the Arts & Life team of The Dallas Morning News.

Hayhoe is the director of the climate science center at Texas Tech University and a lead author of the U.S. National Climate Assessment, a report mandated by Congress every four years.

Wednesday’s “Duets” event was hosted by Anna Kuchment, a science reporter at The News and a contributing editor of Scientific American.

Wednesday night, Hayhoe said D-FW could be subject to significant rain events that produce record-breaking rainfall amounts, followed by extreme droughts. “It’s like you get hit by the door coming and going,” she said.

While Kuchment and Hayhoe’s conversation centered on how D-FW will affected by climate change, it also touched on the denial of climate change, and what we can do to prevent the change.

Hayhoe, who was born in Canada, said, “Until I moved to the U.S., I’d never met anyone who didn’t think climate change wasn’t real.”

Admittedly, Hayhoe said she comes from a family where she was “brainwashed” into thinking science was cool since Day One; her father is a science teacher and her grandmother had a degree in science education. Hayhoe described the denial of climate change as “a uniquely American thing.”

And what was the solution to the problem they were presenting? Did they say how much it would cost, who pays for it and who gets the money? Did they talk about mitigation strategies in the event they are wrong and the planet gets thrown into a catastrophic cooling period?

Hayhoe described the denial of climate change as “a uniquely American thing.”

And toying with language is a propagandist's tool. No one denies that the climate changes, we just do not think that humans have much, if any, apprecialble influence on the climate.

Funny how journalists (way down there in the spectra of those who actually took real science courses - and understood them) are the ones who write this stuff.

These are idiots.

1. They deny actual science that questions, rightly, the predictions of the climate models. They claim “consensus” which is nothing other than an orthodxy trying to herd everyone else into it.

2. They refuse to acknowledge the political nature of the climate agenda, which, upon evidence of its scientific errors changed the name of the agenda from “climate warming” to “climate change”.

3. Never in the course of earth history has the climate NOT been changing, even though a human lifespan was often not long enough to notice the change.

4. NASA recently reported that solar changes are about to deliver a very much colder period to earth.

Dallas is one of the safest places weather wise.

No hurricanes, or blizzards, yes we get tornadoes, but the impacted area is rather small. Worst thing is the occasional ice storm.

Good point.

Sometimes Al Gore and others, say that global warming is the greatest danger to humanity, to civilization as we know it, etc.

The global warming folks tend to be liberal, and as such, will never see any bad impacts from leftist policies, or from ongoing threats such as Muslim terror.

Pack all those folk from turd world countries back where they came from and relieve Dallas from so much strain on their sewer system. Less water use, less gasoline use, less pollution, less landfills needed, less natural gas and electricity, less, less, and less. See, easy solution to Dallas’ climate change.

Environmentalists are appropriating Christianity and a fair amount of paganism.

Fires, famines, floods, drought, all because we haven’t repented and converted to their faith. They’re ripping off the Book of Revelations - fire, pestilence, death, hunger, and insect swarms.

EVERYTHING is due to Mommy Earth being mad at us, she’s sick, we’re hurting her, just love Mommy and do what the environmentalists tell you to do. The disaster that scares you into obedience is irrelevant - they only offer the same solutions of guilt, living in poverty, and literally sacrificing your children. The reward is a promise of paradise that has never really existed, but they so believe in it.

They say we’ll all live in a Garden of Eden like paradise if we all convert, though all the unbelievers really need to die. (That they can openly cheer for something to kill 90% of humanity makes them a bigger threat than Jihadis, given how many work in the life sciences.)

“Until I moved to the U.S., I’d never met anyone who didn’t think climate change wasn’t real.”

I guess English isn't taught in Canada, either.

So, this guy has never met anyone who did not think climate change was not real.

To restate, he has only met people who do think climate change is not real. Alternately, he has only met people who did not think climate change was real.

At least that's what I get out of "didn't think climate change wasn't real."

It has been a problem for thousands of years. why is now a ‘problem’ and suddenly we have to cure it.

Everyone in Europe believe in global warming so it must be true. (that is a good scientific conclusions)
