FBI agents raid San Juan government offices as part of investigation into fraud, corruption

FBI agents this week raided the municipal offices in San Juan, Puerto Rico – rooting through documents and seizing digital records as part of a widespread investigation into fraud and obstruction of justice charges tied to the city government.

San Juan’s purchasing division was the target of the raid. And while FBI special agent Douglas Leff did not implicate Mayor Carmen Yulin Cruz in the raid, he did tell local media that “we are going to follow the investigation where it leads us.”

Cruz tweeted Tuesday that she has instructed city officials to cooperate with federal authorities and said, “If someone has done something wrong, they should undergo due process and face the consequences of their actions.”

On Tuesday, more than two dozen agents entered the city’s Municipal Tower carrying briefcases, cameras and electronic equipment, Puerto Rican news agency El Nuevo Dia first reported.

Federal agents raided the third, fourth, 14th and 15th floors of the building, looking for documents related to corruption inside San Juan’s purchasing and contracting departments.

The raid was sparked by an anonymous tip called into the comptroller’s office over how the mayor’s office awards government contracts – specifically, a $4.7 million deal with construction company BR Solutions.

El Nuevo Dia claims the company is owned by a businessman who has made questionable political donations to several Puerto Rican politicians.

The raid comes a month after President Trump hinted at corruption in the U.S. territory and caused an uproar after questioning the number of people who died as a result of Hurricane Maria.

caused an uproar after questioning the number of people who died as a result of Hurricane Maria.

No, Trump did not question the number of people who died. He questioned the fake statistics used to multiply the official death toll by about 50 fold.

As a brief reminder the report written mainly by SJWs at GWU used an unsupported estimate of the number of people who allegedly left the island in the months after the hurricane. There were 16,608 deaths in the sixth months following the hurricane. The report estimates that there should have only been 13,633 deaths. That's because they assumed the correctness of an estimate of 3,327,917 total population before MAria and an estimate of 3,048,173 afer Maria. Those are both unsupported estimates especially the latter which was based on surveys of airline passengers about whether they were leaving and not coming back.

If the FBI wanted to find some real corruption, they could have raided themselves in Washington and saved all those travel costs.

This is excellent. After seeing the videos and pictures of pallets of water and food intentionally left sitting on the tarmacs and warehouses while the mayor tries to score political points by complaining that Trump didn’t do enough to provide sustenance to the victims of the hurricane - well that political regime deserves some comeuppance.

If they didn’t make use of what was generously donated by private citizens and also provided by the federal government at extra care and cost, and then requisitioned via all kinds of insider-deals for duplicate supplies, then they deserve investigation and prosecution. I’ve had enough of corrupt government, and it’s just insult to injury to be corrupt and then complain that there isn’t enough left over to help people after you stole or stonewalled to prevent the supplies provided from getting to the people who need it most. This goes far beyond your routine day to day corruption and I’m glad to see it investigated. Draining the swamp, PR style.

It’s a bad idea to insult the boss. Even worse to insult him when you know he did right by you.

That’s true, lol, if a bit snarky. Let them make some examples out of the corrupt and hopefully in the future their successors will think twice, or better still be honest and careful guardians of their office and the people’s needs.
