Massachusetts mayor charged with fraud to fund lavish lifestyle refuses to step down

An embattled Democratic mayor from Massachusetts, who was arrested last week on suspicion of fraud and tax charges, is refusing to step down, calling his arrest "politically motivated" hours before city councilors pushed back a debate on how to handle the matter.

"I am presumed innocent until proven otherwise," Mayor Jasiel Correia told reporters at a press conference at Fall River's City Hall. "I will not allow political enemies to remove me from office."

He said the attack began shortly after assuming office because he was "challenging the norms" in the town.

I think the city council should know whether there is any procedure, other than an election, by which to remove the mayor. However, they seem quite confused about their options.

“I am presumed innocent until proven otherwise,” Mayor Jasiel Correia told reporters at a press conference

I wonder if he said that during the Brett Kavanaugh hearings?

There is nothing democratic about this mayor. The mayor is a true blood democrat

""I will not allow political enemies to remove me from office.""

That's what he calls the resident citizens of his state who do not vote for him?

FWIW, I think this is less about what he allegedly did than why the Feds went after him. Corrupt pols are a dime a dozen and, if guilty, this guy is pretty small beer.

But the perp is also one of only 10 MA mayors who endorsed the Pubbie running for MA gov.

I think that little factoid explains all.

Having seen a few corrupt mayors in my time, I think the way the City Council should handle this is to pass a number of resolutions that significantly control the mayor's activities in office, particularly around his financial dealings and access to city funds.

While that may not remove him from office, it could remove him from "power".

I got all excited when I skimmed over the title, not focusing on “mayor”. I thought it was referring to Lieawatha, and possibly stepping down. The “fraud”, “Massachusetts”, and “lavish lifestyle” all fit.

Never mind.

Never mind the Dems acceptance/encouragement of violent mobs as the “new normal”; years ago they accepted corruption by their leaders. When Newark mayor Sharpe James was asked about various items he bought far beyond his means, his (repeated) answer to the cameras was: “There is nothing wrong with a black man in America owning a boat or a house”. He was eventually jailed, but decades after his crimes - and his crimes are still swept under the carpet. Here in NJ we have Senator Menendez staying in his race despite his crimes, and nobody bats an eye anymore. Loyal Dems will still vote for him, and there are less and less normals left in NJ to oppose him.

Apparently, one of Correia’s main reasons he stole from investors was “to advance his political career.”

Mmmmmmm....in retrospect, seems to be a bad use of stolen money for the mayor.

The guy had very big ambitions at a young age——when his parents wanted to move out of Fall River, he urged them to stay....b/c he already had his eye on the mayor’s job.

Good points.

Democrat mobs, violence, theft, self-aggrandizement, sexual gratification with anything handy......the new normal.

With them, its always Me-First.

Yes, and they have made it crystal-clear that the ends justify any means. I couldn’t imagine dealing with that Kavanaugh circus, but they will continue until they are jailed.

A corrupt Democrat is a contradiction in terms.

If they help themselves, its because they live to serve the little guy.

Let’s have compassion for them if they turn out to be venal - its for the common good.
