Fresh off Kavanaugh win, Republicans aim to confirm more than 40 judges before midterms

With the Supreme Court nomination of Brett M. Kavanaugh completed, GOP senators are quickly pivoting to filling out the rest of the federal courts, eyeing more than 40 district and circuit judges they want to confirm before the end of the year.

One top priority is filling the seat left vacant on the powerful D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals when Justice Kavanaugh was elevated.

Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Charles E. Grassley, Republicans’ point man on the issue, said if the White House can nominate someone this week, lawmakers could have Justice Kavanaugh’s replacement seated by Christmas.

That would be in addition to 38 district judges and three circuit judges already pending on the Senate floor, who Republicans say they should confirm before they leave Washington to campaign for the mid-term elections.

“McConnell ought to keep the Senate in session until we get all 41 of those judges done,” Mr. Grassley told conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt Wednesday.

The Judiciary Committee could add nine judges to that list during a meeting Thursday, and five others had their confirmation hearings Wednesday, meaning they, too, could see committee action this month.

If the GOP expands its Senate majority, judicial nominations should easily sail through.

If the Democrats take over, they will sit on them through 2020.

Here's what I wonder.

When the next SCOTUS pick comes up, how many Liberals are going to tumble to the notion that they are being hornswoggled? Will #WalkAway get stronger because some people are going to question just how Trump (or any GOP President) keeps picking allegedly awful people?

He needed to do this anyway. Get rid of all the judges that think they can overrule the president’s executive orders.

If.

I don’t expect new vacancies to come up until a second Trump term.

Things won’t change much for the time being.

“If the GOP expands its Senate majority, judicial nominations should easily sail through.”

I’m not sure how that works. Is it even possible to get enough of a majority to overcome the so-called 30 hr rule, where Senators have to debate each candidate for 30 hrs before they can vote, if any other senator insists on it?

The 60 vote cloture rule applies only to legislation.

A simple majority is all that’s required to cut off debate on judicial and executive nominations.

More GOP senators means swing senators won’t hold a veto and Democrats can’t block a vote.

I would love it if ALL the vacancies for all the courts were filled with hardcore Pro-Constitutionals by Christmas, with 100 more waiting in reserves.

Simple. Keep the Senate in session 24/7. Schedule the debate for nights and weekends.

Let’s see . . . conservative judges all over the country making ‘constitutional’ decisions. A conservative Supreme court not overturning their decisions because their job is to interpret the law and now enact new laws . . .

Wow!!!

No wonder liberals are sad . . .

Republicans should have a real recess, and let them become recess appointments.

District Court judges aren’t that important.

Circuit Court judges are definitely important. Trump has had 26 confirmed. There are 14 more vacancies right now. Getting 3 more seated before the elections would be nice. It would put President atrump more than halfway towards countering the 55 Curcuit Court judges Obama placed on the court.

Obviously any additional SCOTUS appointment would be huge - particularly if it’s a replacement for any of the Gang of Four.
