AUSTIN, Texas — The Trump administration’s proposal to make it more difficult for people to legally come to the U.S. or to stay here could keep apart hundreds of thousands of married couples who don’t earn enough money.
The administration wants to create an income test for people wanting to legally enter the U.S. or become legal residents.
That test would generally give high marks to people with household incomes of more than 250 percent of poverty, about $41,150 for two people and $62,750 for a family of four.
The proposal sets a minimum income of 125 percent of poverty - $20,575 for a household of two and $31,375 for four - for consideration of whether they could become dependent on public benefits, but the rule considers household earnings of at least 250 percent of poverty to be a "heavily weighted positive factor."
“It’s not a bright line. If you have an income of above 250 percent of poverty level you are not assured there won’t be a denial, but you are in much better shape,” said Mark Greenberg, a senior fellow at the nonpartisan Migration Policy Institute think tank.

There’s some kind of rule about having $23,000 in savings, or 300 days of minimum wage (by their standards) in your possession.
The one factor that someone mentioned to a couple of years ago...when you get a 60-day or 90-day visa...you better renew it on time or plan on exiting the country as required. You don’t want to have any Mexican cop standing at your door about overstaying your visa.
Mexican law also says that the President of the Republic may order the removal of any non-citizen from Mexican soil for ANY reason.
No peon circuit judges overruling policy there.
My Filipina wife came here under a K1 Fiancee' Visa and I had to show verified sufficient income.
What were the old rules?? I once knew them but they have faded over the years in my mind. I’m afraid they have faded on the immigration books as well.
But I recall no one in the US could apply. You had to apply at a US consulate in your native country. There was an income requirement meant to assure you would not go onto the government dole. There were strict background investigations that covered work history, criminal, moral turpitude, financial history, and more. It was tough and the process took anywhere from 2-5 years. But in the end the US received a first rate immigrant,
Lefties are aghast that we would deny access to permanent resident status to people who are at poverty level. Everyone else thinks it make great sense not to bring people in just so they can be wards of the welfare state.
Back in the old, old days you needed a US citizen sponsor to vouch for you and say you would have a job when you arrived. The Quakers sponsored lots of people because ... Quakers. Most of my family came over from Ireland in the 1800s under sponsorship of the Quakers. I think in practice, once in the country the Quakers didn't actually do anything to employ you so go find a job or starve to death, it's up to you.
