I believe it is no accident that we would lose the knack of governing ourselves at the same time we absorbed the benefits of modern technology. Nearly instantaneous and ubiquitous world-wide communication, cable television, 24 hour news services, the internet, and social media, have divided our culture into warring tribes and clans, not brought it together. It is simply true that we are less of a unified nation today than we were one hundred years ago when the telegraph was the only means of spreading the word from coast to coast. We were far more sophisticated in the art of self government then. Ironically, our advanced ability to communicate with each other has set us back instead of advancing us in that art. Who knows how long it will be before we adapt, or if we ever will.
