I don’t believe he is doing this because he is a flake. I’d bet he is compromised and they have pictures of him in some unusual situations. That is why he is resigning.
No matter what he does he’s screwed. If he supports the Republicans the Dems will out him. If he supports the Dems he’ll have no protection when the indictments are unsealed.
I have no way of knowing and I haven’t gotten any calls from Senators, but I think that Flake might have been setting the stage for a winning vote on the Senate floor. It is conceivable that Collins and Murkowski were prepared to vote against confirmation. The price of their vote may well have been the FBI background investigation and the only way to trigger that concession was by a request from the Judiciary Committee. Since Flake is retiring, he was free to be the fall guy.
I just don’t buy the story that Flake was just reaching out to his good buddy Senator Coons. I think that the real story is much more complex and reflects behind the scenes maneuvering by the usual suspects. The other advantage of what is going on is that this could trigger yes votes from several of the threatened Democrat Senators. Of course, the Democrat zealots will try to move the goal posts and double cross everyone, but it won’t be a surprise and Trump has given clear rules of engagement for the FBI. I think that we will have a vote on the floor and I think that Flake, Murkowski, and Collins will vote yes.
Of all the women in the senate, Republican and Rat both, there is only ONE who is not a lefty, and that is Joni Ernst of Iowa, who is wishy-washy at best.
Estrogen is not the savior of the republic so many Americans think it is.
