Cracked steel beam found at Transbay Transit Center could imperil operations

The crack discovered Tuesday in a steel beam that supports the roof garden of the new, $2.2 billion Transbay Transit Center — forcing the terminal’s abrupt closure just as rush-hour was getting going — is the latest headache for the 2 1/2 block long transit hub.

$2.2 billion dollar transit hub that is supposed to be the northern terminus of California's high speed rail system. The problem is that high speed rail will never reach this hub. So Caltrain is supposed to service San Francisco from this hub. Caltrain comes no where near the location. It is a $2.2 billion dollar bus terminal. Now it is a $2.2 billion dollar nothing. Liberals in action.

News of the fractured beam is the second bit of embarrassment for the center, which opened last month

. As we first reported two weeks ago, the visitor walkway that encircles the rooftop park is crumbling — dozens of spots along the half-mile path have become the pedestrian equivalent of potholes.

Officials said they were still trying to determine the exact cause of the walkway problem, and a long-term fix has yet to be worked out. In the meantime, officials said the short-term plan was to patch up the eroded sections as needed.

Is the steel from China?

That was my first thought. This was a few years back, but I knew someone at a large construction company who bought steel beams from China. They soon learned that they had to oversee the testing process on site because they had been receiving good test results and a lot of substandard product.

When my co-worker told me this afternoon it was a good thing I didn’t drive into the city, because of the cracked beam, I told her “They better fix it so when the Millenium Tower falls on it, it doesn’t collapse.”

No it was US steel, but third party special inspection was pushed aside by the contractors and welders unions in favor of their own CWI training certs as sufficient, third party quality control Ultrasonic Testing is a thing of the past

but most likely cause is a wacky grandiose architectural design that sacrifices structural integrity
