How would you know? All you did was assume you must be right and post an offensive reply. Remember, the first rule of Dunning-Kruger Club is that you don’t know you’re a member of Dunning-Kruger Club.
Of course the country wasn't equally divided then: there was little chance the militant extremists would take over the country.
And there weren't all the new media that are talking about politics all the time and convincing us that the country is bitterly divided.
But because people didn't have the outlet of the Internet, when they talked about taking up the gun or throwing bombs, they were more likely to do it than people are today.
