Security breach prompts lockdown at Orlando Melbourne International Airport

MELBOURNE, Fla. —

A security breach at Orlando Melbourne International Airport prompted a lockdown early Thursday morning.

According to an airport official, an unauthorized student pilot boarded a commercial jet. Advertisement

The Melbourne Police Department tweeted Thursday morning that the airport is closed, and all flights have been suspended. The lockdown was put in place a little before 5 a.m.

The airport is still closed at this time. The person of interest has been apprehended. The airport should re-open soon.

They stuck "Orlando" in the airport name a few years ago which we locals find confusing, but this is Melbourne Florida in Brevard County on Florida's Space Coast. Florida Institute of Technology runs a flight school out of that airport.

Years ago I did an Army Reserve summer camp at what was then Camp Drum,NY which isn't far from the town (city?) of Watertown.In or near Watertown is "Watertown International Airport".Presumably the word international is included because it's about 10 miles from the Canadian border.

We picked up the International designation when they got a Canadian airline to add a route. There are also flights to the Caribbean so they put in a customs area.
