Julie Chen Supports Les Moonves in 'Big Brother' Return: "I'm Julie Chen Moonves"
Hollywood Reporter ^ | September 13, 2018 | Brian Porreca

After taking a hiatus from her post on The Talk Julie Chen returned to CBS to host Big Brother, but chose not to address the latest allegations of sexual misconduct against husband Leslie Moonves for most of the show.

That was all until the very end of the episode where she seemed to show support for her husband, by signing off on the show with: "I'm Julie Chen Moonves. Goodnight."

It was off script from her usual sign off and the first time she has used the last name Moonves on the show.

The morning after her husband Leslie Moonves was ousted as the chairman and CEO of CBS following Ronan Farrow's latest New Yorker article that detailed new allegations of sexual assault made against Moonves, Chen did not attend The Talk's season eight premiere.

Chen had said of her absence from the morning show: "I am taking a few days off from The Talk to be with my family. I will be back soon and will see you Thursday night on Big Brother."

In Chen's initial statement after Ronan Farrow's July 27 expose that detailed six other claims of sexual misconduct against Moonves she said: "Some of you may be aware of what's been going on in my life the past few days. I issued the one and only statement I will ever make on this topic on Twitter. And I will stand by that statement today, tomorrow, forever."

The statement she was referring to read in full: "I have known my husband, Leslie Moonves, since the mid-90s, and I have been married to him for almost 14 years. Leslie is a good man and loving father, devoted husband and inspiring corporate leader. He has always been a kind, decent and moral human being. I fully support my husband and stand by him and his statement."

This week on The Talk, Chen's co-hosts Eve, Sara Gilbert, Sharon Osbourne and Sheryl Underwood have not shied away from speaking about their now former boss.

Said Osbourne, "As you all know, Julie's husband is in the news and she's taking off time to be with her family. It's very embarrassing and upsetting to have to talk about her husband."

Added Gilbert of Chen, who she has shared The Talk hosting duties with since season one: "I support her always. However, this is an important time in our culture and just because this hits close to home, it doesn't change this story. All women's stories matter. This is very serious and the appropriate actions need to take place. I am happy when women are heard because for a long time they haven't been."

For Chen whether or not she stays at the network remains to be seen. She has yet to reveal when she'll return to The Talk. Although Big Brother, which has been a summer flagship for the network and has yet to be renewed, its celebrity installment Celebrity Big Brother is due to return for a second season.

Everything I’ve read about the supposed “harassment” Moonves got fired for amounted to turning down her pilots and not liking Linda Bloodworth-Thomason and hugging or kissing female colleagues on the lips. He might be a creep but, again, it’s one of those things of judging 1980 or 1990 by today’s bullshit me too standards.

then i guess you haven’t read the full New Yorker article that broke this ... Moonves was basically raping women in his office ... LOTS of them ... and he deliberately destroyed the careers of the women who fought back or threatened to talk, just like Weinstein did ... out of all of the scumbags exposed in this whole deal, only Weinstein was worse than Moonves ...

But of course.... too much money involved to not...

After all, she met him and got together when he was still married to somebody else...

Always wondered how trust was built in a situation like that??

Big Brother is trash. Don’t see why it’s still on. Must be the teeny bopper and lonesome housewife crowd.

Doesn’t all of Hollyweird kiss each other in greeting? They’d never ever snub anyone in power to give them their next role.

I’m sorry but the story defies belief, and I DID read it, no woman gets “raped” in an executive’s office, even in the ‘80s, and then just walks out. LOTS of them have consensual sex on casting couches, sure, and let’s remember that this is an industry where another executive, Michael De Luca, got a blowjob from a woman at a pool party and everyone in town knew about it and the only thing that anyone at the party said or did was that it was uncouth of the two of them to do that in public. I see what you’re sellin’, buddy, but I ain’t buyin’

Michael De Luca is the former president of production at both New Line Cinema and DreamWorks, has been nominated for three Academy Awards for Best Picture (”The Social Network” was his last one) and today produces the “Fifty Shades of Grey” films.

What I am asking you is do you REALLY think consensual sex in Les Moonves’ office was actually that strange of a thing to happen when EVERYONE knew what happened with De Luca and his very willing paramour at Arnold Rifkin’s party? I’m sure some of Moonves’ conquests are angry that what they did didn’t get them ahead in the biz, sure, but I was around Hollywood back then so I just find the accusations of “rape” being thrown around these days to be, well, a little funny knowing that executives, in the ‘80s and ‘90s, didn’t have to rape anybody. There was a line of willing want to be actresses and models. Ask Mike De Luca.

All of that being said, of course, I have zero doubt that Moonves is an awful person who was probably a vindictive and petty boss who likely did take it out on these women - one of them blew him in a car and the one who was his intern admits she blew him in a hotel room and even described his underpants - when they stopped responding to his advances. That does not, however, make him the exception when it comes to Hollywood executives in the ‘80s and ‘90s. It makes him the rule.
