At Jerry Brown's climate summit, one deadline will overshadow all the others
LA Times ^ | Sept. 11, 2018 | Evan Halper

The political leaders coming from around the world for Gov. Jerry Brown’s climate action summit this week will grapple with a lot of urgent deadlines to drive down emissions, but one date is especially exasperating.

It is 2035 — the year advocates aim to kill off production of gasoline and diesel powered vehicles.

“The question of whether drivers should be gently persuaded or forced out of their internal combustion engine cars and trucks over the next 17 years will weigh heavily on the landmark summit, which runs from Wednesday through Friday in San Francisco.”

should be gently persuaded or forced out of their internal combustion engine cars

Do you want to take public transportation or be shot?

“...which runs from Wednesday through Friday in San Francisco.”

Do they have some new climate-friendly technology to get the poo off their shoes?

Is Jerry going to invent a solar powered jet? Or are we supposed to walk to Hawaii?

Don't panic, Governor Brown! Just mandate that all vehicles - from mopeds to trains - be sail-powered. After all, sails worked just fine for Columbus.

I wonder how much emissions will be caused by the .357 magnum discharge when the first one orders me out of my car.

Do you want to take public transportation or be shot?

In some neighborhoods you can do both.

One deadline to rule them all
One deadline to find them
One deadline to bring them all
And in the darkness bind them

They will not force you out of your gasoline-powered car physically. Instead they will tax you out of it. You want to drive a gasoline-powered car after the deadline? Well, go right ahead. Just pay a $1000 surcharge. And that number will increase annually.

Don’t wanna pay? Then no vehicle registration card for you. And good luck the next time a cop pulls you over for speeding or whatever.

Side note: Don’t worry about Barbra Streisand or Robert de Niro. They’ll have enough money to pay the surcharge and keep their big limos.

This is just a pre-meeting for the real meeting which is COP 24 in Poland in December where they will adopt the rules for implementing COP21 in Paris 2015.

Speaking of deadlines, by how many years has Brown’s high-speed train gone past its carefully planned (sarc) completion date?

i wonder how many of those “world leaders” traveled in IC vehicles to/from their respective airports and to/from airport’s near Jerry’s summit? How many traveled in first class jets or private jets? how many had security entourages that included IC vehicles? how many will take IC taxis or rental cars to tool around in the vicinity of Jerry’s summit? yeah, I thought so ...

This is kind of how Japan gets older cars off of the road (and keep the Japanese car industry busy as well) Safety inspections. For the first years they are cheap and easy to pass, but as time goes on, they become more rigorous and expensive. After 10 years or so, it is unfeasible to keep an older car (unless it is a rare collectable). The used cars get sold in the 3rd world.

The same thing could be done here, except with ‘emission standards’. Can’t pass the standard, can’t register the car. Easy Peasy.

You want free health care, free college tuition, and a sanctuary state? Well there is a price. You can’t have a car or a fire in your fireplace. You can only use 22 gallons of water per day. You have to pay for energy that can be produced only by hydrogelectric wind or solar. And you should probably learn Spanish
