Exit poll projects center-left party will win Swedish election, far-right party with white supremacist roots coming in second.
STOCKHOLM (AP) — An exit poll indicated that Sweden's first general election since the Scandinavian country accepted a significant number of asylum-seekers was likely to have the center-left party governing now as its winner, but an anti-immigrant party with white supremacist roots placing second in balloting Sunday.
Public broadcaster SVT said immediately after polls closed that its exit poll indicated the ruling Social Democrats would remain Sweden's largest party, but making its worst-ever showing with 26.2 percent of the vote.
The exit poll projected the far-right Sweden Democrats would get 19.2 percent of Sunday's vote after Swedes had the opportunity to make their views on immigration known at polling places.

But it is clear the incumbent party did not fare well.

Sweden has been a socialist, atheistic country for decades with some of the highest euthanasia and suicide rates in the world. It’s sad it had to take this level of crisis to wake it up from its lull.
Sweden Democrats doubled their vote from 2014, becoming the country’s second biggest party.
But the Social Democrats scraped out in front enough to form either a minority government or a grand coalition with the establishment right.
I thought it was left vs center-right alliance?
The author was determined to say “far-right party wi.th white supremacist roots”, but failed to say “far-left with communists roots”
The Left Party are former Communists. They’re a Social Democratic ally.
The Social Democrats have been in power with few interruptions since 1920.
My guess is that the Sweden Democrats will outperform their exit polls, to the point that it might get the biggest share of the vote, given how close it is to the biggest party. Nobody wants to admit to voting for what the media have labeled the Nazi party.
Nobody will admit voting for the Sweden Democrat Party in the exit polls - “No, not me, I would never vote for them!” - but when the votes are counted, the results will be quite surprising.
They will get around 20% but I wouldn’t be surprised at all if they beat the exit poll projections,
If they say mixed results it’s probably because it was bad for the left
The combined share of the Left is around 40% - it can still form a government but its options as I said either are a minority government or a grand coalition with the establishment right.
So it’s not really a dramatic change because voters wanted to send a message but not change the government yet.

The ‘far-right party with white extremist roots’ - is buoyed by Trump, imho. Probably just normal, Brexit-look-alikes taking a stand for their country. 26% to 20% is a pretty good showing for them. Well done, conservatives. Perhaps there is some Viking blood left. (The rest is here).

Well, My mother was a Swede. Her maiden name was Erickson. Do I qualify? (Erickson is like Smith here)
20% is a big improvement for them - that’s double the vote they got in 2014.
They have become a mainstream party and are well-positioned for future growth.
You are correct, it is not a race. It is conquered nations. Subjection.
I look forward to seeing the final vote.
Eventually they must wise up about the immigration issue. It is even to that point in Merkel’s Germany.
