Honest mistake. Could happen to anyone. I'm sure any normal citizen would be let off with a warning, too.

I recall when I was young and newly married working the late shift at a fast food place. When my shift ended I was hot, exhausted and couldn't wait to get out of there and get home. Since we had only one car, a turquoise Maverick, my wife would drop me off and pick me up at the end of my shift. I stood outside, impatiently waiting, then suddenly a turquoise maverick pulled right up into the parking space in front of me. I stepped off the curb, opened the door, flung myself inside and said, "Come on, let's get the hell out of here!" I heard a gasp and turned to see a black lady whom I had never seen in my life, regarding me with an open-mouthed look of absolute terror.
Of course it was the wrong turquoise Maverick that had just happened to pull up at the exact same time I'd supposed the other turquoise Maverick would be there. But if that woman had been carrying a gun, I wouldn't be here now, nearly fifty years later, telling the tale.

Many years ago I found our local nutjob brushing her teeth in my downstairs powder room. She thought it was her home.
My doors are now always locked. Even if I walk out the back door to take garbage and recycling out to the shed.

Just a couple months ago I walked into someone else’s hotel room by mistake.
I got off the elevator a floor below my room somehow. Plus, the door had been left unlocked. I turned around and fled.
Of course, I didn’t have a gun drawn...

My brother has a neurological condition and gets confused sometimes. He owns a condo and the whole row looks the same. He has found hisself trying to get into the wrong condo. Hes lucky that they all know him.
There doesnt seem to be an excuse for this cop though.

How did she get in?
When she did, was there a clue it might not be her place?
A world of facts about this woman are missing, like what about her taser?

They’re publicizing the victims name but not the officer’s?

Back in the 50s that happened to a co-worker.
She ran out, jumped into the car,and said,”Hi,honey” to what she thought was her husband.
We actually pitied the poor guy-———she was a notably unattractive woman.

Not paying attention and running on autopilot.
It really isn’t hard if you’re distracted to walk into the wrong room.
But what I’m curious about is why her key opened his apartment? You see, putting your key in the lock and it not turning would be a handy alert that something was amiss even if the door opened because it was unlocked. Keys not turning is hard to miss.
Unless the door was open and she immediately went from inattentive to focused on the potential for an intruder. But discounting that....
Dallas isn’t Abilene. Heck, I wouldn’t leave the door unlocked when I was in Abilene. Not sure I’d leave the door unlocked in Dallas even if I was in.
So how is it the apartments might have a common key?

Kinda wondering the same thing myself. Sounds like some things missing in this story.

"In the eyes of the Court, these officers are considered Trained Observers." If I'm a defense attorney in any case where my client was convicted based in whole or in part by this officer's testimony, I'm warming up my appeals.
