Planning a Trip to SW Missouri and NW Arkansas - Travel Tips Needed VANITY POST
8/29/18 | MplsSteve

Posted on 08/29/2018 2:51:51 PM PDT by MplsSteve

The wife and I are planning a trip down to southwest Missouri and northwest Arkansas in late September/early October. We're planning on hitting some national parks along the way - Fort Scott NHS, George Washington Carver NM, Wilson's Creek NB, etc.

It's gonna be a leisurely "We'll leave from Kansas City and start driving and see where we end up" kind of trip. There's no set itinerary other than we'll be down that way for about 5 days or so.

I've requested the usual travel guides - state of Arkansas, state of Missouri, Springfield Mo CVB, etc. But I'm looking for any inside or lesser known info such as places to stay (where I won't get bedbugs or robbed), places to eat (where my chances of getting sick are low to none) and other things to see.

As much as I'd like to, I'm not thinking we'll make it to Branson or too deep into the Ozarks. We'll probably go no further south than maybe Fayetteville. And no, I do no wanna see anything related to that scumbag Bill Clinton!

Like I said, I'm looking for anything - how safe are the communities, etc. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hannibal, MO has a few fun things to see, if you happen to be over that way.

I suggest you check out Yelp and Trip Advisor for places to stay and eat.

I’ve been to that area many times since the 1960’s - Springdale-Fayetteville and Branson. Really nice scenery, great trout fishing on the White River near Harrison and Yellville AR, and friendly folks too.

Go to the spa in Hot Springs, take the paddlewheel dinner cruise and the Duck boats.

Not exactly north but as long your nearby...
I totally enjoyed the experience; cheap too.
I did find a mini diamond, and the next day the found a full-size keeper.

People were all very helpful and many had interesting finds.
And, in town the biscuits and gravy were excellent.

CRATER OF DIAMONDS STATE PARK

One of the only places in the world where the public can search for real diamonds in their original volcanic source, Crater of Diamonds is a one-of-a-kind experience that brings people from all over the world to Murfreesboro, Arkansas. Visitors to the park search a 37-acre plowed field, the eroded surface of a volcanic crater, for variety of rocks, minerals, and gemstones – and any rock or mineral you find is yours to keep. You may bring your own mining equipment to search with (no battery-operated or motor driven mining tools allowed), or rent tools from the park.

Bass Pro HQ, Springfield , MO. Stroud’s in KC for to die for chicken. No duck boats at Table Rock and watch for copperheads, etc. Some fine trout streams in that area.

YES! My great grandfather owned property there back in the heyday. Back when it was "The" Health spa of the day also called the 'Little Switzerland' of America.
It is very beautiful.

Hannibal is way the hell-'n-gone over on the other side of the state.

Eureka Springs, Branson, the College of the Ozarks museum, and their gun collection, (And the Beverly Hillbillies truck...), Pea Ridge NB, just across the line into Arkansas, are all within a couple hours of KC.

If you’re going to be at Wilson’s Creek anyway, not a far drive to Lambert’s Cafe in Ozark (just off Hwy 65), where they are famous for throwing dinner rolls at you. It’s usually very busy. Comfort, fried food.
On the other side of the cultural spectrum, in Bentonville AR they have Crystal Bridges Museum (Alice Walton the main donor toward getting it built). On the grounds is a Frank Lloyd Wright house disassembled in NJ and rebuilt there.
