I don’t think they’re telling Trump. Or even telling us. They are trying to convince themselves that they are not an enemy of the people.

They really want to believe that ignoring long-standing journalistic and ethical standards, which have at times protected the country and are just as important now, is the right thing to do in these special circumstances (people they don’t know anything about elected a president they hate). And that the constant attacks on 1/2 of the population makes them a protector rather than an enemy of the country. They are protecting the country from becoming what 1/2 of the people want it to be and those people must be stopped. Democracy is not longer a good thing since the elites cannot control it. And they want to convince themselves of their righteousness in taking us down even if it means going against their professional ethics and even laws.
